Well Tended

“Carrie,” Bobby whispered, “Everyone wears a mask, being real is the only way to start a relationship. I want to know you.”
Looking into his eyes to see if she could trust him, Carrie started right from the beginning she talked, and Bobby listened, and with each chime of the clock, he grew closer to Carrie Marie. Carrie felt herself becoming disheveled as she spoke as she slowly melted, hair falling, clothes wrinkling, and soul shrinking. The moon had risen, pure white light showed on the white table cloth making the view from the house look dirty yellow; she had covered her life in just two hours. Bobby poured the last cup of coffee as Carrie looked up appearing like a raccoon, mascara running into both eyes.
They sat there in silence sipping their last cup of coffee as a gust of cold air made a loud noise in the tree tops and blew Carrie's hair down into her face, covering her eyes. Her hands in her lap, she dropped her head as if total defeat had overcome her. Bobby’s right hand lifted Carrie's chin slowly as his left hand brushed the hair out of her face and over her ear. Carrie thawed, like her mother’s hand on her face as she laid in her lap on a Church pew, trusted, protected, sheltered, and loved. She looked into Bobby’s eyes into the shelter of his intense light blue soul; she became one with the moment never thinking about harm or hurt.
Bobby held her hand and lifted her up and placed her arm in his and walked her the distance to the center of the field-like backyard. The moon shined brighter than streetlights , stars calling to them blinking Morse code, crickets breaking the silence in systematic reply, fireflies flashing at the edge of the woods, like stage lights at a show. Standing silently, a silhouette, two characters in the distance, painted as smudged gray lines. The beauty of the night surrounding them, an audience of two applauding God’s picturesque beauty made only for tonight. Out of the evening, came a light show of stars, the moon, and lightning bugs sparkled and danced in the silence. Pointing toward the lightning bugs, Bobby broke the silence. “They are also called fireflies. Watch carefully,” Bobby said.
Carrie could see the flickering light repeating to her right and then only seconds later a replay to the blinking pattern across the field to her left. The blinking repeated and repeated like a cavorting of colorful strobe lights.
“Carrie, the first light is the man sending out a call for a mate and the second light, is the female responding. Sometime tonight they will meet up and mate, “Oh, baby,“ he smiled and said.
“Is that so, Bobby Boaz? Well, don’t let those little bugs give you any ideas, there is not going to be any, oh baby here tonight,”
“Carrie your right no mating ideas from me because if the male lighting bug is not the right guy, she will eat him,”

“Really, Bobby, kill him and eat him? Well then I would not take chances if I were you, I am full but not finished,” she said and they both laughed and spun around enjoying the light in the darkness.
