Coming out of college I wanted to play professionally overseas. I had this idea conjured up in my head of how whole story was going to play out. I was going to be in Italy playing in the first division my rookie year, averaging 25 points per game making a half a million dollars. Boy was I wrong! I went to 6 overseas expo camps and had two contracts for teams fall though at the last minute. I decided to go ahead and tryout for an ABA team based out of Scranton, Pa because I had nothing else other than to go get a desk job. I played really well, and the coach loved me. Unfortunately he was coming from coaching another team and he was bringing all of his team with him. He told me I would make the team but he had loyalty to the other guys he had promised to put on team. Another door slammed shut in my face. I had nothing, and my dream of playing basketball was fading away. That same coach called me and told me he used to work for the Harlem Globetrotters and he thought I would be a good fit for them. He ended up getting me an opportunity with the organization and the rest is history. What I have learned is that God sometimes closes doors on us so He can open bigger better ones. So don’t get discouraged when a door may get slammed shut on you, know that He is working behind the scenes to open up that bigger/better opportunity. All you have to do is keep the faith.
Dear Lord
I thank You for keeping me safe. I thank You for closing doors that may not lead to my greatness. I pray that You continue to open doors for me as I continue to keep my trust and faith in You. Amen

About the Author
Derick Grant is originally from Princeton, New Jersey, where he played his high school and college basketball. Grant finished his career at the College of New Jersey as the second all-time leading scorer with 1,543 points, averaging 21 points per game his senior year. He earned New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2005 and also was a Third-Team All-American for the NABC. Derick played in seventy different countries as a member of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters. Known as one of the best shooters in the history of the organization, Grant is in the National Basketball Hall of Fame for knocking down the first four-point shot in the history of the game. In eight seasons with the organization, he had the opportunity to appear on various TV shows.
