The DJ pushed off the wall with his foot while simultaneously hoisting himself up into the attic space. His palms burned, as every fiber within each hand was stretched while clinging to the beam. He was in! Carter paused for a second to retain his breath. He poked his head back into the restroom and gave another sharp cough that registered: I’m still here! To be more convincing, he stuck the air-freshener head into the room and gave it a good blast. Convincing AND choking. With utmost care, he then slid the stained tile back into place. Gingerly inching his way across the slippery beam, Carter headed toward the faint light, emitting from the vent at the gable end. "Thank goodness for streetlights!"
The only problem with Carter’s jailbreak was that he really should have gotten that roof leak fixed months ago. As he inched his way along the beam, mildewed flakes of material began to cascade down from the ceiling along the waterway’s path. If one were to look closely enough, they would witness a minuscule trail of dust forming along the floor.
The eyes of Killer Queen were none too happy. She first noticed the sprinkling of dust as it settled into her hair and caught within her lashes. Soon after, her eyes began to burn, both from debris and from anger, and then she let out a sneeze. She back-pedaled a few feet while following the falling trail, processing the event taking place. Conquering the histamines in her system, the Queen made a bee-line for the bathroom, only to discover that the door was locked.
"You ever hear the one about a woman scorned, Carter?" The vixen was enraged! She made a quick survey of her surroundings and marched toward the fire extinguisher mounted down the hall. Grabbing the canister, she made her way back to the door and pounded down on the knob with unbridled fury. Offering minimal resistance, the latch soon fell to the ground under the blows. With one sturdy kick, the door flung open. Instantly, the Queen began to choke. The aerosol had done its part. The huntress was forced to retreat out into the hallway to clear her passages. Her eyes now burned all the more, as did her ire.

About the Author
For twenty-five years, Teric Darken has been bleeding the ink—from his heart onto paper—through his stories, song lyrics, and poetry. His first published book, A Conversation with Isolation, was released in 2000. Five albums worth of material have been released containing his song lyrics and original music. He holds a bachelor of science degree in religious education, and has served as a staff youth minister. He is a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, where he has served as vice president of his local chapter.
