Starting a new job can be stressful in the best of situations. Even if you have years of experience doing a particular type of job, you still have to learn how things are done in that new company. Any company that wants to be efficient, productive, and have good retention is going to invest the time up front to train the employees in the 'company way'.
This is what Jesus did when He taught the disciples. Jesus gave them (and us) an overview of how the company works and what is to be expected as an employee of the company. He also told them (and us) what we can expect the company to do for us. The 'company' is God and His Kingdom and the employees are His children. All God's children are also disciples who have a job to do. The job of a disciple is the most important job any human has. Since it is so important, we must be thoroughly equipped to perform our duties correctly.
Before He sent them out, Jesus sent them through orientation. They had to sit in the class and watch the video about how the company got started, the vision, and how they fit into that vision. Jesus laid all the cards out on the table from the beginning so that they would know what they were getting into and prepare for whatever was coming.

If you ask someone to do a job, you must first tell them what the job is and give a job description. Otherwise they might get partway into the job and decide this wasn’t what they had in mind and quit. The last thing Jesus did before going back to heaven was to give every believer a job to do: make disciples. This book details what it means to be a disciple and gives a thorough job description so that we will know what to expect in fulfilling our duties. Matthew 5:1–2 says, “And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them.” The kingdom of God operates in a specific way and cannot be altered to fit our way of doing things. Jesus wanted anyone who accepted His call to know how to do it right. So He had to teach them.

Marisa Johnson is the pastor of Changing Directions Ministries and a nephrologist (kidney doctor) at Genesis Nephrology in Shreveport, LA. She lives her life according to God’s Word and wants to share Him with those she encounters.
