I’m reminded of one of my favorite stories written in John 4: 4-26, “The heaviness of this woman’s soul was more than she could, endure. Her life was a portrait of unpleasant memories. But this particular day became “her day” and this day was the day she met “Joy” face to face. The story proceeds to tell us that Jesus needed to go through Samaria. Jesus knew why he needed to go through that town. He knew He was on a mission to rescue someone that God loved dearly. In this particular story Jesus had sent the disciples into town to buy food for the evening. He proceeded with His mission alone. I can see this picture crystal clear, Jesus was propped up there by the well looking very handsome, knowing what His assignment was, He was probably thinking of the reaction the Samaritan woman would have when He told her of Himself, (the Living Water). I can see Him smiling now, as His hair is gently blowing in the wind.
While He is waiting for her to arrive no doubt He was thinking of all the beautiful women He would rescue, women who were wounded with unspeakable scars, women who perhaps had no fathers, women who had abortions, women who had alcoholic parents, women who had mothers who brought multiple boyfriends in and they had no security, and no proper care. Women who had drug addicted parents, women who were raped or molested. Women who have suffered divorce, mental and physical abuse, such as this Samaritan woman. He knew this was the beginning of a life long repetitive connection He would make with women throughout eternity to meet His Father, their Father, the creator of their hearts. In His quest for mental awareness He brought His focus back to the moment. He dearly loved His creation and He wanted to restore all the broken dreams women had ever faced throughout the ages of time. No doubt He was thinking of me and you. Sitting here at this very moment in time was eternity, the perfect Lamb of God!
I truly believe Jesus had personally set the stage for this beautiful person whom He dearly loved. He wanted to make sure no one else was involved in this picture of love, so He made sure no one else arrived because He wanted to single her out so she would realize how special she was.
He wanted this memory to be perfectly etched in her heart forever. He wanted no one to take this moment from her. Jesus knew what she needed and He was willing to go the extra mile for her, so He traveled through Samaria even though Jews would never be caught in Samaria. To the Jews, the Samaritans
were no better than dogs, and they were to have nothing to do with them. This portrait shows us that Jesus loves everyone, no matter where we’ve come from or what nationality we are, God sent Jesus to show us He cares about us as His wonderful creation. I believe Jesus did an outstanding job showing us God’s love and how God feels about us.
When she arrived, she was walking rather swiftly, (no doubt a red/yellow personality) He asked her for a drink, and she could not perceive why a Jew would ask a Samaritan woman for a drink of water. First of all, men did not talk to women in public; second of all, Jews did not address Samaritans. She was startled, but she answered Him and said, “Why are you asking me for a drink when Jews don’t even speak to Samaritans”? Jesus proceeds; “If you knew who I am you would ask me for a drink because I would give you living water and you would never thirst again”. She wanted to know right away, “Where do you get this water”? Jesus said, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I give will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Then Jesus continued and asked her to bring her husband to meet with them. I’m convinced He wanted to get to her personal pain so He could bring healing to her heart. She said, “I don’t have a husband”, Jesus said; “You speak the truth. You don’t have a husband now, but you have had five husbands”. Her mouth dropped as she gazed into His eyes, she thought, who in the world are you? As He continued to converse with her, He told her all about her life but He did not make her feel the way others had made her feel. She felt loved, and valuable, she knew there was something different about this man. She couldn’t stop staring at him she saw something in Him she had not seen in any other man she had ever known, but she didn’t know what it was. Just being in His presence gave her a feeling of respect she had not been shown before. Her heart began to beat faster, she was being changed, Jesus was hugging her inside of her heart and she could feel a genuine love radiating from His heart to hers. It was pure, holy, innocent, and a perfect love which she had never felt before. As they proceeded, they spoke of the true worshipers who would worship the Father in spirit and truth.
Then she mumbled as she held her gaze; “I know the Messiah is coming” who is called the Christ. When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Then Jesus said the most profound statement, as he tilted His head and gently smiled, “I who speak to you am He.” She knew she had met Jesus, “The Christ.” She was so joyful that she left her water pot there and ran into the city to share the good news about the man she had just met because she had seen “Joy” face to face, she was so joyful she could not keep this information to herself. I’m certain her life was never the same. The ashes of her life were now traded for beauty, this made her exceedingly joyful, she now had a garment of praise in her heart and she ran to tell everyone and glorify the name of Jesus. Because she had found someone who is better than the finest of gold or choice silver!
