Overcoming the Enemy's Storms

“We’re looking for Diane Gardner,” he said. “You are the only passenger left at the airport. I’m Detective Smith.” He pointed to the man in the brown jacket who now stood at the other end of the bench. “This is my partner, Detective Lott, and we’re from the Corona Police Department.”
He flashed his badge and nodded at Detective Lott who flashed his badge, but said nothing. Detective Smith pulled three pictures out of his sport coat pocket and sat down next to me. The first picture was a man’s driver’s license.
“Do you know this man?” he asked.
I felt uneasy. No one gives up their driver’s license to anyone. Was there a car accident involving this man and Curtis? Does the detective think I know something? “No, I don’t recognize him.”
“Do you drive a red Cadillac with license number . . .?”
Why did he ask me about my car? Oh no, was Curtis in a terrible wreck? I took a deep breath. “Yes, I do.”
“Do you have two sons, one Curtis and the younger Carlton?”
I hesitated. “Yes . . . they are my only children.”
The detective showed me the other two pictures. “Is this your son, Curtis, and is this his ex-wife, Karen?”
“Yes, that is my son and daughter-in-law.”
He stared into my eyes. “Well, Ms. Gardner, I’m sorry to tell you this, but Warren, the man whose license I have, was shot in the head at close range today. We think he’s your ex-daughter-in-law’s boyfriend. He’s in the hospital having surgery and is in critical condition. This took place outside Karen’s apartment in Corona around 1:00 p.m. Curtis allegedly shot him, kidnapped his ex-wife, and drove off in a red Cadillac. A neighbor gave us the license number. DMV shows the car is registered to you.”
