Preview of Depth of Faith:
Chapter 1: Faith’s Characteristics
“Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Rom.10:17). This is the central connection between word of God and hearing. Faith begins with the word of God. But the first couples instead of adequately listening, and keenly obeying the word of God their faith collapsed. They were misguided by the serpent which was the vehicle of Satan. Serpent guaranteed they will be ‘like God’ if the forbidden fruit is consumed. Their faith failed since they had given undue importance to the tricky serpent rather than God‘s words their creator.
Defining faith through this sad incident, and comes to the book of Hebrews Chapter 11 then pointing out the correct definition of faith as a future hope of unseen things. Though the first Adam failed in faith, and was never mentioned by the author of the epistle of Hebrews, “the second Adam Jesus Christ” is portrayed as the author and finisher of faith in the first verses of chapter 12. Thus we understand that Jesus is the originator and finisher of true faith of all people.
Adam’s two sons divided the world into two: a group of true worshippers which was and is always a tiny fraction which was began by Abel and the other group –false worshippers-was led by Cain which had always a large number of followers.
Faith develops through obedience. The first couples failed to understand this vital point but Noah, Abraham and Moses identified and led the O.T saints in true faith. When studying the N.T critically it is imperative to know faith has several phases which revolve around Christ Jesus who is the center point in all matters. A convenient diagram is given for the right understanding of this crucial point. The defining of deep faith and the depth of faith is also briefly described in this first chapter.
CHAPTER 2: Faith and its Conduct: O.T Elders in Hebrews Chapter 11
Faith without works is dead. (James 2:17)Adam and Eve were not mentioned as faith warriors by the writer of the Hebrews since they did not have enough faith related actions. But he profoundly portrayed several other warriors in chapter 11 to give us a wonderful outlook of true faith in our lives.
A total of 19 warriors of faith mentioned in the chapter and all of them were systematically narrated in this second chapter of the book. Their vivid actions are true examples and what we should do when our faith is being challenged and asking critical questions for every believer’s progress in faith.
Starting from Abel and ends with Samuel the bold actions of these ‘hall of fame of faith’ must thrill every true believer as reading through their stunning actions. Amazingly there were three women also including in these strong pillars of the O.T saints.
CHAPTER 3: The Deeds of Faith in Action: N.T Events
Jesus Christ is the center point of faith in the N.T whether in a manger or after the resurrection on the sea of Tiberius. The O.T saints’ prime goal was to aspire for the arrival of the Messiah in flesh and connect their true faith to Him. The N.T saints’ chief goal is to aim at the Messiah’s arrival in absolute glory and to be transformed and to be with Him.
After critically looking at the brave O.T saints, in Hebrews 11, this chapter of the book passing through the edible examples of N.T events in connection with faith. It begins from the first Christmas night Jesus as a feeble baby and ends with the beach scene in Tiberius. The hasty shepherds had seen the baby boy Jesus in human form in the manger after having faith for the trip. Going through the several events in N.T we come to a scene where the resurrected Christ reinstated the faith of the backslidden Peter the leader of the apostolic band. There are a dozen well written incidents of faith’s actions narrated in this third chapter. Three women were also pinpointed due to their absolute faith in Jesus Christ.
Chapter 4: True Faith’s Unyielding Nature
In this chapter, brief description of the unyielding nature of true faith. Typical examples are Job who lost everything, the three Hebrew young men who happened to be in the fiery furnace, Daniel who was in the lion’s den, John –the Baptist who was beheaded. But none of these faith warriors ready to relinquish their precious faith. John- the Baptist was the trumpet of new faith who challenged the world of luxury and power to great simplicity of unique life style and focus on Christ. Due to his new faith heaven had granted him the extra ordinary privilege to baptize thousands of people who were repenting their sins and our beloved savior-Jesus Christ who wanted to fulfill all righteousness.
This chapter has dramatic events in the life of Peter who found the new faith in Jesus-his Master but sadly backslidden. However, he cried bitterly due to his mishap of carrying a sword instead of prayer and true faith. Since his tears were genuine, Resurrected Christ reinstated him to be again the leader of the apostolic band and the spokesman for the new faith. Christ’s compassion is so vibrant for a sinner who has genuine tears and when that happens a legitimate commission surely would be assigned as we learn from the life of Peter.
Chapter 5: Seven Important Types of Faith in N.T
There are seven important categories of faith is pointed out in N.T. They are great faith, little faith, ship wrecked faith, weak faith, unfeigned faith, precious faith and full of faith. They were briefly explained in this last chapter for our benefit. It would definitely assist any reader to identify with open heart their own faith’s category and if need be to improve must soon take adequate measures.
A final trial to define deep faith in the author’s view has been explained in the last part of this chapter.
