Robert F. Johnson, 55 was found dead in the lobby of Southwest General Health Center, a hospital in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. Imagine that, not in the ER, not on the operating table but instead in the lobby. Surrounded by the latest technological advances: in the company of trained personnel and yet he dies in the lounge area. All the expertise to address his condition yet his life ends within the very institution established to help. This was a man who did not come in and ask assistance or fill out forms, he just simply came in and sat down and died.Did he have any idea how sick he was, did anyone stop to note his condition or did he just blend in, camouflaged into the decor of the waiting room? Did Mr. Johnson know how close he was to the end? Why not a coffee shop or a bookstore, why a hospital? Why did he die? He died because no one bothered to stop and ask him, "are you sick?" People filed past, not wanting to disturb him. They kept quiet because they thought he was asleep. No, he wasn't asleep; he was dead. No one took time to stop and confront his condition.

Do you have any voices of truth in your life? Is there someone, anyone who can be brutally honest with you about you? Is the only thing more frightening than listening to a voice of truth, being one? If there is a responsibility of the church, it is to confront, to hold us accountable, to be that voice of truth. But what happens if she doesn’t, or worse, her leaders desire popularity more than our purity? Killing the Church is not to be seen as an attack against the Church, no more than discipline is an attack against a child. The reality is that without correction, little can be done to keep child or Church on course. And for correction to be effective, it first requires confrontation.
About the Author
A former missionary to Zimbabwe, Africa and Cornwall, England, as well as a chaplain in the US Army, DR. JEFF PARKER has been given the unique opportunity to see the Church in a myriad of settings. From the emerging Church in Africa to the remnants of Western Europe to military bases around the world, Dr. Parker has addressed Christians in a variety of venues. His experience comes from not merely visiting these places but rather having lived there. Today, he pastors in the inner city of Jackson, Mississippi, to a city in transition.
