Sit with me quietly for a few moments and tell me what you want in life. Tell me the true desire of your heart. Then we can go from there.
Here is my desire for you. I want you to come to me each day for a set period of time. This is our time together, and this is the time I can do great things in you, even when you are unaware of what I am doing. Know that this is my desire, to be with you, to share with you eternal life, to create in you more and more a new heart. I shall give you a new heart, and put a new spirit in you; I shall remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh instead. You will not notice this transformation in you day-to-day, but over time you will see that you are changed. God has a “heart of flesh” and this is to be your heart too. This is the essential work of God in you.
Let us look into the heart of God to see what it is like. This is the image for your own heart, and what the “remake of your heart” will look like more and more as you spend time with me. The heart of God is the essential image of the kingdom of God.
“God is light, there is no darkness in him at all.” In my hour of darkness, when darkness ruled, God’s heart was full of light, and so was mine. Even when darkness prevails around us, our hearts can be filled with light. There is nothing on earth that can bring darkness into the heart of God. He is blinded by nothing; he is fooled by nothing, he is bewitched by nothing, he cannot be led astray. The more your heart is filled with light, the more you will be unassailable by outside influences or powers. “For it is not against human enemies that we have to struggle, but against Sovereignties and the Powers who originate the darkness in this world, the spiritual army of evil in the heavens.” Believe in the reality of evil that is the cause of darkness in the world, and believe in the light of God that overcomes the darkness. There is no darkness that can overcome God. So, in your own heart, where darkness does exist, be not afraid, because God has you in the palm of his hand, and it is his light that overcomes the darkness. Darkness cannot overcome you, nor deceive you when you are God’s. And you are God’s.
In heaven there is no darkness at all. Nor is their falsehood. No lie or falsehood can live in the kingdom of God without being uncovered and destroyed. Falsehood is from the evil one. It must be guarded against as an enemy of God, for it finally leads away from God. The light of God exposes falsehood and destroys it. You can count on me to expose any falsehood in your soul, for it must be destroyed as God’s enemy. People don’t realize enough how destructive falsehood is in their lives. How can trust be built when falsehood or deceit lies beneath, hidden from view? And what is the very purpose of falsehood except to gain some advantage over another? Think, in your own experience of life, what falsehood does to relationships.
God cannot be deceived. There is no game playing with God. Look at what happened to Ananias and Sapphira when they tried to deceive the community. Look at what acts of dishonesty and falsehood have done in today’s business world. Falsehood is never from God, and falsehood cannot be tolerated by God or the kingdom of God. If there is falsehood in you, God will take action to remove it from your soul so that you may live fully eternal life. This is because falsehood undermines the kingdom of God. If you have falsehood within you, and most people do, welcome God’s cleansing of your soul. Will for him to do this as you would a surgeon operating on a cancer.
Part of the change of the heart, as you can see, comes from purifying the heart of things that operate against God’s love. Cultivate that prayer in you that asks God to uncover these things and to create the understanding and will to rid yourself of whatever it is. Do this for your sake and for the sake of God and his work in you. “Save us from the evil one.” Do not think of this so much as evil that lives outside you, but of the evil that may have settled in your soul. This is the work of God, to cleanse your soul of such things, whatever it may be, so that you may be God’s work of art in all the glory he had in mind for you from the beginning. You are God’s work of art, and there is no beauty like it when it is purified from the dross than can come into the human soul. Welcome the purity of the heart of God, and ask him to transform you more into his image.
In coming close to God, the first thing is always to take those steps that are needed to break from those things that lead away from God. But eternal life is about entering into more fully that very life that is in God. Clearing away impediments is the equivalent of opening the door to the heart from the inside. This is, in effect, giving God permission to be the guest in your soul that will transform you more into his image in heart, mind and spirit.
Recall the story of the woman at the well. Recall that part of the story where I tell her of her real life, of her five husbands and that the one with whom she was now living wasn’t her husband. This is the equivalent of what I have been describing above. I tell her the true state of her being in terms of how she has lived and is living. This is what I will do for you. But the point isn’t to condemn or induce guilt, but to clarify what the reality is in terms of the state of one’s soul, and in terms of the impact on relationship with God. The next thing that I tell her is what worship looks like. I am, in effect, telling her what life with God looks like. I say to her, “You worship what you don’t know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews. But the hour will come – in fact it is here already – when the worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.” This is where I wish to lead you, to worshipping the Father in spirit and truth.
Let me begin this way. The woman at the well, because I told her who she was, believed that I am the Messiah. I will tell you, as we continue our walk, who you are too. This is part of the method of God, and this is part of the personal revelation that comes from walking with me. Just as with the woman at the well, I will tell you who you are in a way that reveals who I am. From what I told her, she moved to thoughts of the Messiah, and then I confirmed to her that I am the One: “I who am speaking to you, I am he.” You will come to know, beyond doubt, that I, who am with you each day, am the Messiah of God, the Word of God, the revealer of God to the human soul.
In this you will begin to experience joy that comes from me, and that peace that no man can take from you. “Peace be with you.” And I will go further. Just as I did with Thomas, I will tell you to “put your finger in my side and in my hands,” and you will have the same response as him, “My Lord and my God.” Just as Peter knew who I was by the working of the Holy Spirit, so too will you come to know beyond doubt who I am and what I am doing. No person or thing can give this gift to you. It is the gift of knowledge that comes from God alone. And, like the two on the road to Emmaus, your heart will burn within you. This is our walk “to Emmaus.”
