“Given the terrible state of the economy, this is a difficult time for our company. As you might imagine, we are tightening our belt and making a few changes. As of today, we are reducing our staff, and I’m sorry to inform you, your position has been eliminated.” You may not have heard the next several sentences. You are stunned, afflicted by a sudden shortness of breath, a sudden increase in your pulse. There is a rush of blood to your face and you can feel it reddening with each passing second. Your ears are ringing. You’re slightly dizzy and feel like you might throw up. This can’t be happening to you! Emotions range between wanting to cry out and wanting to leap across the table and grab your “former” boss in the Ranger chokehold! How could they do this to you after the past two and a half (or 5 or 15 or 25) years of faithful and effective service? Don’t they realize how committed you’ve been to this company? Aren’t you the one primarily responsible for having turned your department around from its previous downward spiral? Having recruited and mentored all of the recent technologically savvy young talent? Having increased the company’s billable rate by 8% this past year alone? Having just helped secure that new project that 12 of your competitors were also after? Who is going to take your place and be as effective as you were? And what about your client relationships? How are they going to be affected? Does your company not see your current and future value? Are they nuts? Have they lost their collective mind?

He is familiar with the full range of emotions experienced when one hears, “We are going to have to let you go,” having been both the recipient and deliverer of that message. It is his relationship with Christ that has sustained Ted throughout his professional and personal life, and it is wisdom, gained by grace through difficult times, that he seeks to share.
Ted has three daughters and a small army of grandchildren. He and his wife, Lisa, live in Atlanta, Georgia, where they are members of The Church of the Apostles.
