Chapter Twenty-One: "Let Love Be Without Dissimulation…" (Part I)
“Let love be without dissimulation…” (Rom 12:9). This particular word is for God's people. What a magnificent word from the Lord! Our Lord Jesus Christ loves you with a perfect love. The Lord is going to help you understand the true essence of the word, “Let love be without dissimulation…” (Rom. 12:9). You will be able to drink the sincere milk of the word.
“Let love be without dissimulation…” (Rom. 12:9). In order for one to understand this particular word, you must understand what the Lord is having you to see in the word dissimulation. Dissimulation is defined; making or becoming dissimilar. Dissimulation comes from the word dissimulate, which is defined; not similar or like, different. This is the key phrase, not similar or alike.
What is the Lord trying to tell you about dissimulation? The Lord wants you to know that love is love! Love has no dissimulation. Love has no difference. In other words, there is only one way to love. Love cannot and must not be without dissimulation. There is not anything to be compared to love. According to the word dissimulation, it is unlike or different than any other. This is the question unlike the other what? Anything and everything that is not love. Whatever comes to mind that is not love. Let love be without dissimulation. Love stands on its own unlike anything. Love is so powerful it also covers anything that is not love. “…And above all things, have fervent charity among yourselves for CHARITY COVERS A MULTITUDE OF SINS.” (I Pet. 4:8).
The verse continues to say, “…Abhor that which is evil; and cleave to that which is good.” (Rom. 12:9). Abhor is defined as: to shrink in fear, disgust, or hatred, detest, hate. This would be opposite of love. “We are to cleave (cling) to what is good. Cling to love. Forsake all evil. “Abstain from all appearances of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly…” (I. Thess. 5:22-23). Let love be without dissimulation.
The next verse declares, “Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;” (Rom. 12:10). This verse is the epitome of showing love toward your brethren with kindness. Many times we say we love our fellow brethren but we stay clear of them or avoid them because of previous injuries or insults. This must not be. You must show affection to the other fellow brethren regardless. You cannot love or show kindness or affection at a distance. Reach out to the other brother or sister in love. Make a kind gesture toward them. This could be difficult for some of us because we have been wounded. The Lord knows this all too well. The solution is “And be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ sake hath forgiven you.” (Eph. 4:32). Start regarding the other person or persons higher than yourselves. Yes, higher than yourselves, despite of the situation. This will fulfill this word, “…in honor preferring one another;” (Rom. 12:10).
The next verse continues, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;” (Rom. 12:11). This verse is not referring to your business, but indeed the Lord Jesus Christ and your heavenly Father’s business. Whatever the Lord has ordained you to do, be not slothful (lazy) about what the Lord would have you to do for his kingdom. Whatever our heavenly Father has commanded your spirit to do be diligent (consistent) about it. In order for you to be fervent you have to be boiling over with anticipation and showing great intensity and devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ. This is pivotal (crucial). This ferventness and diligence must not be unto man, not even unto you. This ferventness must be in the spirit not the flesh. Although your flesh is doing most of the work, it is your spirit that wants to please the Lord Jesus Christ. The flesh must always be in subjection to your spirit. Your spirit must never be in subjection to your flesh. Your spirit man should be in control of your flesh. “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.” (Rom 8:8-10).
Therefore your spirit will always serve the Lord. And then this word will come to pass. “…fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;” (Rom. 12:11).
The next verse, “Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;” (Rom. 12:12). These three are indeed one. The hope that we are to rejoice in is Jesus Christ. We are to continue to pray for his return and the tribulations that we encounter we must persevere with patience. Everyone has not come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ like we have. So be patient in tribulation and hold on to the promise of your soul. Rejoice, for Jesus is truly your anchor. “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us; Which hope we have an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, which entereth into that without the veil; whither the forerunner is for us entereth, even Jesus, made a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek” (Heb. 6:18-20).
This will be the sincere milk of the word, how marvelous. Our heavenly Father wants you to ponder on these verses, how you are to give yourselves over to this word from heaven for you. All of this word reflects on “love without dissimulation”. No uncertain terms or misgivings, simply love. “Let love be without dissimulation…” (Rom.12:9).
Father we pray that you touch everyone that reads these letters. Keep them in your abiding presence forever. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ continue to be with you and the love of God, our Father. Amen.
