First of all, why would God call me to “the” ministry? When you read Ephesians 4:11, you will find your answer. God has placed the “five-fold” ministry (and you) in the Church for at least three very specific purposes: 1) For the perfecting of the saints, 2) For the work of the ministry and 3) For the edifying or the building up of the Church. This includes ministering where you are as well as another place where God may be calling you. When the saints are perfected and begin to minister as Christ intends for them to do, the Church will then function at its best. The word “perfect” means to mend, to repair, and to completely furnish. The Greek word Paul used for “perfect” was a medical term used to describe the mending of a broken limb and involved two separate works. 1) Setting the bone back in its proper place so it can heal, then 2) Allowing the limb time to regain its strength. I believe that there are two objectives that Paul was teaching concerning the purpose of the five-fold ministry. The first purpose of the ministry is to “set” the broken lives of people back into their proper place with God so they can heal. The second purpose involves helping them gain strength and empowering them for individual ministry.

Glenn Murphy entered the ministry at age twentyfive. He and his wife, Paula, have been married for thirty-six years. They have two married children and two grandchildren, and they currently live in Louisiana.
