God took my promise to be a good father and decided to challenge me and teach me lessons that one day would glorify His greatness. Like every parent, I just wanted a normal, healthy child similar to one of those in the 50's sitcoms I watched as a boy. The biggest problem, the parents in the sitcom faced, was when the child came home with a “B” in math. If my story had been a sitcom, it would have been titled “Father Knows Best Meets the Exorcist.”
God allows trials to come into the lives of Christians to teach us to rely on His strength and to bring us closer to Him but at times it seemed that instead of just coming closer to God I was going to collide with Him. I had not come to the realization yet that I had no power to control or change certain things in my life. I thought I was smart enough and capable of handling anything.
A better description of the situation would be to imagine me sitting in a car going down the highway at 80 MPH when suddenly the gas pedal becomes stuck, the brakes fail and the steering wheel comes off in my hands. As they say, “there was never a dull moment.”

Whether your teen is a slight problem or a nightmare, you can learn from my experiences raising a teenage sociopath. There is always hope, with God’s help. God can give you peace, even when your life is in chaos.
In light of recent events, Americans are looking more at the complex reasons that cause shootings. A significant number place the blame with parents not paying enough attention to their children, and of course, mental illness. It has been shown from previous shootings that usually these young people feel like outsiders because they don’t have a peer group’s respect and support, and they felt unloved at home. Love is one primary inhibitor to bad behavior. I show in my book that there are three primary inhibitors that will make a difference with the behavior of most children.
With our complicated lives, all the distractions and demands on each of us, we have to make the most of the time we have with our children. If the influence of the three primary inhibitors is not being felt by your children, then they may not have moral restraints to prevent bad choices.
About the Author
God inspired me to write Collision Course with God a year after my son Aaron’s execution in 1999 for capital murder. God made it plain to me that my experiences, raising a sociopath, would be of benefit and encouragement to other parents who might be having problems with their adolescent child. After putting my story together, I began researching child psychology books to see what the secular experts were saying and was surprised to learn that most of the ideas agreed with biblical teachings. The biggest difference in my book is that every word is backed up by biblical verses.
