Irene walked purposefully up the street towards Phyllis’ house. She decided to sell cosmetics on Glen Avenue today. As she approached Phyllis’ house, she spied a commotion on the block. Desiree was wrestling on the front lawn of her house with a man. His fingers dug deeply into her frail arm, as he dragged to his waiting cab at the curb.
“You worthless tramp,” he yelled. “You are eating me out of house and home. Look at you! You’re a blimp. The Hindenburg! You’re probably going to blow up, you fat pig.” The man shook her loose in disgust. She recoiled and ran towards the house for safety. He stormed down the walk to the taxi.
Phyllis stood by the gate in front of her house. The man turned and glared at her. “What are you lookin’ at?” he bellowed.
“A sorry excuse for a man!” Phyllis shouted back.
Irene clapped her hand to her mouth and stifled a giggle at Phyllis’ boldness. The man turned and lunged forward as if he were coming across the street to attack the older woman.
“Go ahead,” yelled Phyllis, patting her apron. “I’m packing my pistol right here and I hardly miss. I shoot at worms lower than you for practice.”

About the Author
Lorraine Gilman lives in Atlanta with her husband of more than thirty years, Murray, and their two hyperactive Jack Russell terriers, Pippa and Tebow. She is also the proud mother of three grown children—Adam, Michael, and Margot. After years of being a frustrated artist, she put down her paintbrush and began to type. A Flawless Foundation is her second book.
