He's My Son

The nurse returned to the room and said “the helicopter had arrived”, but she did have some bad news for us. The helicopter approved by the military had no room for Teresa to ride with them because it was a smaller transport helicopter. She would have to drive to Lubbock, and Landyn would be without us in the air. We didn’t like this, but it was the only option we had. Teresa was told she needed to leave right away so she could get to Lubbock for the surgery. The trip to Lubbock was about a two-and-a-half-hour drive, and the helicopter ride would be half an hour. Teresa would be two hours behind Landyn getting to Lubbock, and he needed immediate head surgery to repair the damage. Teresa went over to Landyn and kissed him on the check. She told him “good-bye” and that she “loved him”. She came over to hug and kiss me, and for the first time, I could tell she was scared. I told her God would be with Landyn and would watch over him. I said to Teresa “be careful on the drive to Lubbock’. She told me “she would be careful and we would be together soon”. She went back to Landyn to kiss him one more time. She was well aware it might be the last time to see him alive. She cried over him for a moment, kissed him once more, and then left with Barbara for Lubbock. 
Not too long after that, the air ambulance team came to get Landyn for the flight. They took great care in making sure everything was ready for the flight. Occasionally I would reassure Landyn his daddy was there and everything would be okay. Once they were ready to go, I asked if I could say good-bye to Landyn. They wheeled him next to my stretcher. I rose up and leaned over, gently kissing Landyn on the forehead. Even though the doctor didn’t want me to get up, he let this one slide considering the situation we faced. With my bruised and swollen hand I touched his bloody hand. I tried with all my strength to tell him I loved him and would be with him soon. I told him he was about to go on an awesome helicopter ride and would love it. It would even go higher than his kite, I explained to him. Tears streaming down my face, I kissed him good-bye, and then the flight team left with Landyn. I knew it might be the last time I saw him alive.
