He wondered who this woman was? Something troubled her and he didn't know what. He hoped he would learn the answer, but he knew it wouldn't be today.
The silence of the morning's float trip continued, but it had lost is comradeship as each of them was lost in private thoughts.
"I've got to get away from him. I might have to work with him, but I'll never go anywhere with him again. I know he likes me but I won't let his growing feelings for me get behond this day."
"Is something wrong? You're frowning."
"Just too much sun, I guess, for my first time on the river this summer," she fibbed.
"We're about to our landing anyway. We can finish cleaning the lower half of the river another day."
After they dragged the canoe to the gravel bar, Meg started towards her cabin when James called, "Wait up, Meg! I forgot something."
Meg stopped but didn't turn around. James took her by surprise when he came in front of her and gave her a quick, gentle kiss.
"I forgot to kiss you. Thanks for a fun morning."
Meg's lips turned upward when she looked into his bright eyes. What she saw was unexpected and was surely going to complicate her summer.
