A Priceless Treasure Was Found!
The little boy came running into the house and exclaimed, “We’re rich, we’re rich!” Daddy carefully lifted the worn chest from his son’s hands, brushed off the dirt, and placed it on the table to examine the contents of his son’s discovery. With tears in their eyes, he and his wife saw it was full of gold coins and silver pieces. Precious gems lay on the bottom, glistening in the light. They had discovered a rich blessing!
Haven’t all of us dreamed, at one time in our lives, that we would be the recipient of a lost treasure?
I can tell, with full assurance, that probably every reader has a rich treasure within their grasp at this very moment. Thesauros1 is the Greek word of treasure, transliterated: “the place in which good and precious things are collected and laid up; receptacle, in which valuables are kept; a treasury; storehouse; repository of collected treasures.” Treasure2 can be defined as “a great quantity of anything collected for future use; something very much valued; great abundance; repository.”
The treasure I am referring to is the Bible—the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures. This powerful Word is God Himself. It contains the way of salvation and eternal life. It is quick, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. The precious words it contains are holy, never to return void; it reveals the heart of the Lord; it is pure and true. It gives light and guidance, and it is our source of deliverance and blessings. Because its contents are life and health, the Word will change our hearts and set us free from our sin. The Scripture gives hope and a sure future in eternity. Through the Word’s mighty power, we have a song of praise and worship. The Bible is absolutely trustworthy. If all that Jesus did was told, the world could not contain the books that could be written.
My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1–5)
Each of us has been given a personal love letter from God Himself. The Word of God is vital, relevant, and necessary to our success. Money cannot buy the wisdom and understanding we receive from its pages. This treasure contains mighty promises, showing us that we can be victorious in this present world. What a privilege is ours to have it in our possession.

She spent 24 years in full-time Christian work in the field of Christian education as an administrative assistant and conducted workshops. She is an author of the book, Never Give Up, a speaker, and a Bible teacher. She has a DVD entitled “Set Free” with a Study Guide. Jan has recorded three piano CD’s.
