For the scientist and healthcare professional this book is a much ‘lighter’ review of a small portion of the scientific knowledge regarding sleep. It is Sleep 101 from ‘Another’ perspective. In this book one will find many references to Scripture because although the Bible is not a medical science text, it speaks of medical science with divine insight and accuracy.
That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun. - Ecclesiastes 1:9
God created Science to help us understand and discover the wonders of His world. For Him in regards to all knowledge nothing is new. Therefore, we must not ‘beat ourselves up’ - because our state-of-the-art scientific research is just our current best educated guess in unlocking all the secrets and mystery of Sleep Science. In addition, God did not intend that knowledge about health and healing to be solely the domain of the health care provider. By establishing a mutual sharing relationship between caregiver and patient, untold benefits can be gained on the road to achieving great health and well-being. It is fitting that healthcare providers understand and let their patients know that in obtaining an optimum amount of sleep each night, they are cooperating with God in the work of restoration and recuperation.
Many of us unduly suffer due to the detrimental practice of intentionally not getting the proper rest and sleep that we need in order to maintain good health and well-being. God created sleep for the benefit of our physical bodies and our spiritual and mental well being. In this sense...sleep is God’s medicine. God did not intend for the spiritual life to be separate from the physical – holistically they are one! Acknowledging and understanding this fact is crucial to those who are called and committed to the ministry of healing.
For the layperson, this book is a ‘not too technical’ review of sleep and sleep disorders. My hope is that everyone will gain some very interesting insights into the essential phenomenon of sleep and the miracle of sleep as God’s medicine.
Although this book is primarily for adult men and women, hopefully, it will also inspire one to apply the information contained herein to promote healthier lifestyles for our teen and school-age children who are continue to reap serious negative consequences from lack of sleep.
Still one might ask the question: Why write a book entitled: Sleep is God’s Medicine? In reality, many people already have a good working knowledge of the lifestyle changes and sleep habits that they should adopt in order to avail themselves of more restful and therapeutic sleep. However, often with self-management health programs, or health and wellness therapies there remains a significant amount of complacency and non-compliance. Why is this? Because again for many there is no deep emotional or spiritual commitment to more long-lasting change or adherence to prescribed or recommended therapeutic interventions.
It is my hope through a clear, deep understanding and appreciation of “Sleep is God’s Medicine” that many individuals will be inspired to make the necessary lifestyle changes and appropriate therapeutic interventions sufficient to obtain better sleep. Making these changes permanent I believe will result in not only a significant difference in the reader’s overall quality of life but will also help them along this life’s earthly and spiritual journey.
