Overcome Your Thirst

Have you ever had one of your daily activities interrupted by great thirst? Were you ever so thirsty that everything had to be put on hold until you got yourself something to drink? What about the kind of thirst that caused your tongue to be stuck to the roof of your mouth and the walls of your throat seemed to be sticking together because there were no signs of moisture? No matter the degree, we have all experienced thirst at some point in time, and we can all attest to the fact that it is indeed very uncomfortable, and more so, it has attached to it, the great need to be satisfied.

Thirst is defined by the Webster’s Dictionary as “An uncomfortable dry feeling in the throat and mouth, accompanied by an urgent desire for liquids.” Thirst acts as an indicator which alerts us of a deficiency of liquid in our body. It yearns for satisfaction, and is usually followed by an act that would seek to bring just that. At times, just having any drink would simply ease the yearning, but there are times you are so thirsty, the only thing that would give you any kind of satisfaction is a drink of pure refreshing water.

Just as our bodies thirst, as humans we experience great yearnings in our inner beings, that we spend our time, energy and in many cases, lots of money, trying to satisfy. These yearnings may present themselves through a variety of ways within the many facets that join and work together to make up who we are as individuals. We can identify them by a feeling of emptiness, a void or a great need that we might experience, and in almost every instance, once that longing is felt, we set out to fill it. Although every person is different and each circumstance is very unique, as humans we experience varying degrees of emptiness that we long to be filled in one way or another. If you have ever experienced this feeling of needing that one thing, person or activity that you are convinced will provide the satisfaction that you need, then you definitely know what it means to be thirsty.

The Woman at the Well in scripture also had a great need. She experienced great thirst and found herself along with her water-pot, at a well where she had intentions of drawing water. She felt that having a drink of that water was necessary to quench the thirst that she felt within. It was at this same well that she encountered the kind of fulfillment that would satisfy her once and for all. She came face to face with what she really needed, and did what was necessary to bring about the kinds of changes in her life that she desired for so long. As we are in every instance, she was faced with varying options of quenchers. Perhaps it was similar to a choice between having a soda-pop and getting a drink of pure refreshing water. Instead of doing what she always did by reaching for what could only bring her temporary satisfaction, she made a conscious decision to activate and utilize the very thing that would bring her the kind of satisfaction that she had been searching for all along – Everlasting Satisfaction!
