Baseball

Baseball has been titled our National Pastime. Former President Herbert Hoover once said, “Next to religion, baseball has furnished a greater impact on American life than any other institution." 

There exists a bond between baseball and religion. It can be found within the scriptures of our Holy Bible. Many examples are detailed in this book including how faith and courage were important thousands of years ago and now even today. 

President George Washington played catch with an aide-de-camp for hours and Abraham Lincoln was at bat in a sandlot game when informed he had won his party's nomination for the Presidency. In the dark days following the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack, it was President George W. Bush who demonstrated America's resolve by standing on the mound at Yankee Stadium and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch in Game 3 of the World Series. As the President walked to the mound, chants of "USA, USA, USA" erupted throughout those hallowed grounds. The nationally televised event showed the nation and the world that America was back.

The Holy Bible and scripture are very relevant to our daily lives. When time is taken to reflect, the relationship between the game and our Lord's word becomes evident. If this is true of baseball, why is it not also true in our other everyday endeavors. 

Interwoven within this game which ties one generation to another are player stories and incidents reflecting and mirroring God's word from his text. Challenges overcome by Biblical heroes and heroines are likewise faced and overcome by these memorable players. Diverse races, religions, genders, ages and status come together in both our Bible and game. As former player and announcer Joe Garagiola once said, “Baseball is a game of race, creed, and color.  The race is to first base.  The creed is the rules of the game.  The color?  Well, the home team wears white uniforms, and the visiting team wears gray.”  

The Book of Genesis states “There were giants in the earth in those days.”  Herein read about the giants of faith in the Bible and the many giants of faith in the game.

Over 400 Bible verses from the Old and New Testament are quoted. The experiences of many players of different religions are retold within the context of scripture. Among those mentioned are over 100 members of our National Baseball Hall of Fame. Scripture found in the context of our national game translates to scripture noticeable in other aspects of our daily lives. We need only look! Read, laugh and shed a tear as you enjoy the Word coming to life through this enduring game. Baseball is truly a special gift from God.
