Clinging to the Promises
Rebuke and reform had come again—this time by Ezra, Malachi, and Nehemiah. It had become quite apparent that nothing could prevent the human heart from sinning in thought, word, and deed—not miracles, not angels, not prophecies, not discipline, not even the sacrificial system that God had set in place. No matter what God had done, or how close He came to His chosen people, they would soon forget about their relationship with Him. Sin would rear its ugly head and bring about corruption. Only repentant hearts could bring them back to Him. After all the things the Jews had been through, more trouble was coming for them; but this time, it would be coming from an outside influence. God was preparing to do something new, and He was about to “shake the tree,” so to speak. He used the next four hundred years, the time between “law” (the Old Testament) and “grace” (the New Testament) to prepare their hearts for their coming Messiah. He used the Gentiles, who ruled over them, to test the Jews and dismantle their reliance upon outward rituals and laws that could not change their hearts. As they tired of oppression, unrest, and hopelessness, they longed even more for their coming King, Who would come to help them. Through God’s discipline, He had exposed the sins of the Jews and shattered their hearts. Now He would prepare them to receive mercy and eternal salvation through Jesus—God’s Son.
