“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruits you will recognize them…” (Matthew 17:15-16, NIV).
“Satan works with all his might to destroy God's servants. I would never have thought that these types of things could ever happen in the church. The church is supposed to be a happy place filled with peace and love—a safe place. But, I have learned that where there is goodness, evil lurks nearby to attempt to destroy it. Matthew 17 warns us about the devil in sheep's clothing, and we are warned throughout the Scripture about the ‘evil ones’.
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…" (1 Peter 5:8-9; NIV).
These devils work for Satan to achieve his goals. They are real. I know. I have met them!
Amid all of the suffering and chaos, I knew that I had to make a change. I felt that God was calling me to leave this place. But sometimes, a call like this is hard to accept. I had never experienced anything quite like this and it was extremely painful. Still, I hung on, thinking that maybe I was wrong; that God wanted me to stay and try harder to bring peace to this church in crisis. I was struggling with God much like we read about in the Scriptures. But for me, God said it was time to go. And He took control in a way that I did not understand and found hard to reckon with; but with a huge reward waiting on the other side of it all.
What I learned from this experience was that people who continue to neglect their relationship with God—those who battle for control and power—just plain forget their creator and the whole point of being alive! Their problems are truly Spiritual problems of the greatest proportions. Our churches are in trouble!
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you”. (Matthew 5: 11-12). In the days ahead, I would utter these words many times.”

The Devil Made Them Do it at Tiny Town Church is a true story about how Satan and his band of devils infiltrated a major denomination and one of the small membership churches in its charge and attempted to dismantle and destroy the church, its mission and vision, its pastor, and its congregation. It isn’t just about a set of specific circumstances in one small place. It tells a greater story; it tells the continuing saga of humanity at its worst. The story at the Tiny Town Church just happens to express itself through this one small place and the things that happen when people lose their focus on God and focus, instead, on themselves and their own agendas.
The lessons that were learned from the Tiny Town experience show us that this is a problem that knows no denominational boundary. For where the Holy Spirit is alive in the people of God, there will be evil trying to destroy their good fruits!
Wake up! Spread the Word! Satan is real! He is alive! He wants nothing more than to destroy the worship of our Lord. What better place to start than in the small membership church? Who is sitting in the pew next to you?
About the Author
Sophie Baker was born and raised on the Gulf Coast. She holds a degree in registered nursing; a BS in agriculture/animal science; a master’s in Divinity; an MA in Christian leadership; and her doctorate is in ministry in pastoral leadership. She is an ordained minister and spent many years in the pastoral ministry of the Methodist Church. Upon retiring to her beloved Ozark Mountains, she and her husband have assimilated into the Amish culture there. She serves in the pastoral, community, and wedding ministries and she continues to write stories about God’s love in our everyday situations. They have seven children and many grandchildren.
