My inability to phone home caused me to face the obvious: we had no electronic connection to the world; we were stranded there in total informational silence. We could contact nobody . . . and nobody could contact us. Thinking about it, the former was a practical problem, while the latter just a petty inconvenience that quickly morphed into a phenomenal gift: nobody could contact us! When and where in modern life can we ever get away from our electronic shackles? We constantly have televisions and/or radios within earshot, bombarding us with never-ending commercial messages—and smidgens of inane programming interspersed to hold our interest. Smart phones demand our attention with their relentless beep, forcing us to stop what we’re doing hundreds of times a day to type small snippets of meaningless conversation. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn all demand that we take immediate notice of the most ordinary, irrelevant details of strangers’ lives, insisting that just because we can post something stupid or mundane for the world, we should. Skype and FaceTime beckon us to have video conferences just because. We click our phone cameras to take amateurish selfies and photos of anything and everything; photos that we will never look at again—as soon as we finish proudly sharing them with the world, along with all our personal information. Worst of all, we have immobilized ourselves to the extent that we can no longer make even the simplest of decisions without first reading our palms!
But here in the dark on this island, we had none of those distractions; just two dumb guys without smart phones. Imagine—life without being attached at the hip to our mandatory portals to the parallel universe of cyberspace that sucks us in and consumes our every waking breath. It was life as life used to be—as it was intended to be—before we all became electronic idol worshippers. It was truly glorious: a liberating feeling beyond description! Leaving our sailboat in such an unexpected way had given us not only freedom from the slavery of our electronic chains, but an opportunity to briefly enjoy that freedom, with the incomparable quiet backdrop of the entire universe above us.

About the Book
What would you do if you unexpectedly found yourself stranded on a desert island? You’d simply pull out your cell phone and call or text for help, of course! But what if you had no cell phone—or no water, clothes or any other necessities? You’d pray to be rescued, for survival, and for your very life. God would hear your prayers and answer them. But you’d have to listen carefully for the answers, because they don’t usually come how or when we expect, and we sometimes discover clarification in surprising places.
God breaks into our lives when and where we least expect.
About the Author
A lifelong Midwesterner, Wayne Bender was born, raised and educated in Illinois. Completely disregarding Horace Greeley’s famous advice, he went east some years ago to grow old with the country. He is now retired from the practice of law and lives quietly in the Indianapolis area with his wife. Wayne is a devoted Christian who was unexpectedly blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get away from the world to pray earnestly and personally experience how God answers prayers.
Wayne prays regularly, but only sails about once every ten years.
