The feeder
It was a blustery January day when we recognized the tiny figure tipping unsteadily back and forth on the empty garden hook attached to our balcony railing: incredulous that we were witnessing a hummingbird rocking against the winter wind.
With hearts full of love and compassion for the helpless state of this little friend we quickly got out our feeder, mixed up the sugar water solution and hung it out.
Our ploy worked. Not only did he take right to our offering but he returned again and again, each time thrilling us with his presence. We made him our friend and named him "Herald." We thawed and replaced the liquid frequently during those bitter January days. The days slowly softened with the new season, and we anticipated the continued friendship. We'd seen these little green and tawny birds actually sit on human fingers. That was our dream and plan. Maybe we'd see a family as well.
Then he disappeared.
Eventually we came to realize that he didn't need us anymore, and all the love and bribery we could offer wasn't going to change things. And no, we wouldn't be experiencing the friendship and intimacy we'd hoped for. The feeder swung back and forth, back an forth by itself, no visitors. and so we abandoned the watch.
I think we felt a little like God must feel. When times are tough and we find ourselves in the storms of life, His loving compassion, care, protection guidance and presence are precious to us. We experience the true source of our help.
Then when the storms settle down, we fly off into our skies of independence, leaving God,
Offering us his love and best,
lonely,
waiting,
watching,
and craving us.
Many times He too waits in vain.
He however, never quits the watch.

About the Author
Patricia Mussolum lives in British Columbia, Canada. She is married with two children and two grandchildren. She continues to teach piano well into retirement and will continue as God brings students to her—believing that God doesn’t have a retirement plan. She is a water color artist and has recently begun lessons in violin, loving the challenge.
She has led various Bible studies in homes and churches, and never tires of the stories shared with others. “Everyone has a story,” she says. “It’s about where they are with God, whether they realize it or not. He is constantly pursuing and loving them.”
“So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; And He will come to us like rain, Like the spring rain watering the earth”
(Hosea 6:3).
