We are time oriented. We are time keepers. We measure everything by time. We jog for 40 minutes. We take an hour for lunch. We work 40 hours a week at our jobs. We get up at 6:45 am. We have to have the children in the bed by 8:30 pm. There 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, 52 weeks in a year and so on. We have travel time, tea time, down time, arrival time, lunchtime, story time, bedtime, alone time, this time, last time and next time. We are pushed for time and pressured for time. We have to spend time, take time, make up time, take a time out. It’s been a long time. My, how time flies. We have a fun time and we have no time.
It has been estimated that the average citizen in North America invests his 70 years in the following ways:
24 years sleeping
14 years working
6 years eating
3 years learning
4 years conversing
5 years traveling
Actually, we all have the same amount of time each day. That is one thing we all share. How we make use of that time is up to our choosing. We have 168 hours in each week. At best we only use 4 of those 168 to meet together to worship and thank our heavenly Father. He is the one who allowed us to have 168 hours in a week. 4 hours if you attend Sunday school, worship, Sunday night and Wednesday night bible studies. That is 208 hours in a year out of 8,736. The average 70 year old would spend 14560 hours out of 611,520 hours attending services with God. Now, do you realize that is only 66 or 67 days? Days not years. That is a little over 2 months out of 70 years. Some choose to attend all 4 hours but it is embarrassing to say, most don’t. I find it amazing how many “reasons” are used for not attending. Then you have the ones who show up (usually late and after things have begun), slide in, take the Lord’s Supper and slide right back out. But should it be like that? Do you think that pleases God? What about any extra things such as study groups, special classes, gospel meetings and vacation bible school. Shouldn’t we be willing and ready to give those few moments of time to help improve our spiritual life and further the gospel of Christ? You will get back exactly what you put into anything. If we did these extra things, it would not be so hard to find help to carry them out, not to mention teachers for bible class.
You cannot spell time without an “I” and a “me” in it. God granted “me” this time on earth and “I” have to use my time wisely and to His glory. The only way for “me” to do that is “I” have to be involved.
