About the Author
I was born a Lutheran, son of a Lutheran teacher. I married the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. I became a Lutheran elementary and secondary teacher and subsequently a Lutheran Professor. I was heavily involved in Lutheran district and synodical affairs. All of these experiences included a life of prayer. Joining the choir at Faith Lutheran, Georgetown Texas, was no different. Our choir director, Phyllis Draheim, always closes every rehearsal with prayer. She simply singled someone out and asked them to pray, Martin, Patty, Darrel, etc. Increasingly, I was asked to pray and without fanfare, was referred to as the chaplain. I discovered it was a lot different having to be ready as opposed to simply being a participant. Initially, I simply prayed unwritten and unrehearsed. Then I began to search for published materials, or wrote paraphrases of Psalms or Paul’s prayer in Galatians. Slowly, I started writing my own, mostly in prose, experimented with some litanies and finally without being too aware I was into writing in poetic form. Personally I give credit to the Holy Spirit from whom all good thoughts are derived. It is my hope that these prayers may be of some inspiration and spread support for choirs as they proclaim the message of Good News on a regular basis.
