“Crucifixion is slow process of, among other things, suffocation (more properly, asphyxiation --the choking on your breath). In order to inhale the victim had to hang by the nails in their wrists. However, to exhale, the victim had to transfer their weight from their wrists to their feet pushing on the nail in their feet in order to lift themselves up. This constant up and own motion would have caused excruciating pain from the nails, as well as the back rubbing up and down the stipes. The caps of thorns (providing Jesus was still wearing it on the cross, most likely He was since that would add more pain and shame to the Crucifixion) would have been constantly moving on His head by hitting the stipes. There was no comfort on the cross.” The unnatural position of the body made every movement painful and greatly interfered with breathing, especially inhaling, taking a breath was excruciating, for an attempt at adequate breathing, it required lifting the body up by pushing up on the feet and flexing the elbows (How He Died, 2006). This put all the weight of Jesus body on the nails in his feet, the pain had to beyond the maximum any human being could bear. After the nails were driven through His wrists and feet, he was then hoisted upward and then the cross dropped crudely into a hole in the ground. The pain of the torn flesh and his bruised, lacerated, naked skin ripped against the rough wood of (our) cross. This further increased the bleeding and pain.
It is important to remember what was declared in John 19:33-36 “33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: 34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe. 36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken” (Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalms 34:20). This takes me back to one of the pressing questions I had searched for an answer. With Jesus so badly beaten --his body torn and lacerated horribly, what was the concern about his bones being broken? Our scripture witness, Isaiah 52:14, testifies “As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:” Jesus is now unrecognizable as a man. It is paramount to also understand that Jesus blood loss must have been hemorrhagic. It is truly amazing that during such mutilating and mangling injuries that not one of His bones is broken as God decreed in John 19:36.
What was it about the bones, that was of such paramount importance that not one of Jesus bones were broken? Baffling to my finite mind, I asked the Holy Spirit why and He shared the answer with me. As I have said repeatedly whenever the blood of Jesus is honored the Holy Spirit will manifest Himself.
As you may recall from our discussion of blood, we learned that there is no substitute for blood. More importantly for this discussion, we also learned that the blood is reproduced only in bone marrow. The question that also comes to mind then is how would this affect or impact His bodily resurrection? In order for Jesus to have risen with a fully, functional, flesh and bone body was, of course, by divine intervention. In addition, God in his plan and omniscient knew that Jesus would have to have the blood loss replenished just as in any human body. Jesus is still the hypostatic union, even though He has sustained the hemorrhagic blood loss caused by His crucifixion. The bones of his human body held bone marrow, which is where and how blood is restored and replenished in the body. We can recall that Jesus was born a Holy thing in Luke 1:35. His” holy blood” had to be restored from His bone marrow. The bones of the body that God had prepared for Jesus were declared by God to remain intact, and not be broken. Moreover, God could not allow the blood supply of Jesus to be desecrated (Acts 2:27; 13:37).
Scientific evidence has demonstrated that blood can only be replenished in the bone marrow. I reiterate that there is no substitute for blood. Jesus did not have a blood transfusion. Some reader may think this is a preposterous hypothesis. However, when I asked the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, why God declared none of Jesus bones be broken this is what the Holy Spirit revealed to me. I absolutely understand that the answer could be because God just said it, no bone of His body will be broken. Just as it was in the beginning God “said” and everything was created. Our scripture witnesses (Romans 11:33-34) always supersede scientific evidence. Who can know the mind of God?
Let's review the facts. Jesus gave himself for a blood sacrifice. The Bible tells us without blood, there is no remission (of sin). Jesus died and emptied himself of his blood. He went to hell and was raised up a resurrected body. Our scripture witness, Luke 24:34-43, testifies that he was seen and touched. Also, he talked, walked, and ate food. Luke 24:39 expressly says that a spirit hath not flesh and bones and this is Jesus speaking, “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” Furthermore, Jesus was seen by 500 witnesses and walked the earth for 40 days before he ascended up into heaven.
