Isaiah 41:10a
Fear thou not; for I am with thee be not dismayed; for I am thy God.
Fear. It’s the single most powerful weapon against the Christian life. The daily spiritual warfare can be intense. It can truly dismay the most devout Christians. I love to use Civil War examples when preaching or teaching about fear.
During the first battles of that War, the South was having many victories even though they were out manned and poorly equipped. The leaders of the North set out to the battlefield to discover why they were losing. They discovered later, by chance, that many of the North’s weapons had not even been fired. Some of the muskets were packed with as many as ten musket balls. The soldiers were forgetting they had not fired and were reloading their guns. Immobilizing fear had gripped the minds of their soldiers.
Our minds are the battlefield. Fear will cause us to freeze. Then it’s easy to become dismayed, leading to victory for evil. The goal of evil in our minds is to make us quit. Sometimes, before we even fire the first shot.
Jesus faced fear at Calvary, but nevertheless, His love for us took Him through the cross, the grave, and to victory. Accept the perfect love of Christ fully. Then understand 1 John 4:18 that says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” Is there torment in your battles? If yes, then accept that Jesus loves you. And as I also have learned, Jesus even likes you!

About the Author
Samuel Charles Poteat, Jr. grew up in North Carolina in an area known as the Piedmont. His mother had a love for the county, which Sam shares. She built a home on what was originally a dirt road where Sam grew up loving the outdoors from which many of his devotionals have their origin. After becoming a Christian in 1994, God implanted within him a strong desire to share his faith and lead others in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. God called him to Fruitland Bible Institute in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where he graduated in 2000 and was licensed to preach.
