"We have to operate," the doctor said as he completed his examination of our eleven year old son's ear.
Staggered by the blow of his words I knew I must lean more on Jesus. And already He was almost carrying me.
For within a few short weeks my husband had become unemployed, losing his job one month after we purchased our new home. We had no medical insurance, I was pregnant with a high risk of giving birth to a Down syndrome baby, and now our son Jamie needed a major operation to remove a tumor from inside his ear.
Even though the future looked as bleak as the winter landscape, we still had hope - hope in our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
"We must pray for a miracle," mu husband and I agreed after discussing the doctor's report.
And with others joining with us, we prayed for the Lord to heal Jamie's ear without an operation if it was His will. As for Jamie, with his child-like faith he accepted His healing as a matter of fact.
After having been allowed time to make financial arrangements, the time came to schedule the surgery. The tumor could still be seen, protruding slightly from inside his ear.
At home alone one day while moving restlessly from room to room, I felt an urgent need to consult with Jesus the Great Physician.
Sitting down on our lovely stairway, I told Him I didn't understand why He hadn't taken away the tumor as I had believed He would. But, as far as I was concerned, it was gone!
A few days later I sat quietly in the examining room and watched the highly trained specialist examine Jamie's ear again.
Suddenly he raised his head and stared at me, "It's gone! The tumor's gone!" he exclaimed incredulously.
Unable and unwilling to restrain myself, I cried "Praise the Lord!" And Jamie smiled his sweet Christ-like smile that said "I'm overwhelmed but not surprised."
Dumfounded, the doctor placed his otoscope for another look. Straightening up shortly he turned to me again and asked, "What did y'all do?
"We just prayed." I answered.
"Is that all?" he skeptically asked.
"That's all!" I answered ecstatically.
How long he paced back and forth voicing his astonishment I really don't know. After all, I had just witnessed a miracle. But finally, he assured us there was no need for an operation since there was no tumor.
Exuberant with joy we hurried home through the cold wintery dusk to share the good news that we had wanted and prayed for had happened!
