Help My Unbelief

It is a very powerful statement that says faith is the solitary requisite for pleasing God. For the scripture professes, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a Rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6) Have you ever pondered the question why faith is absolutely necessary? Why all other good works, right behavior, and well intentions are secondary in comparison? What is it about faith that is so pleasing to God that no other act can take its place? The answer to the necessity of faith in God’s eyes lies in the power that only the act of faith can command and that is the ability to avert man’s focus from himself to God. Without faith, we see only ourselves and disrespect the meritorious Being of God. Faith takes the focus off of self. If we negate the phenomenon of faith, we become soi-disant gods. It is expressed in 1 Corinthians 1:29, “that no flesh should glory in His presence.” Therefore, the act of faith is the ultimate gesture of respect, trust, and honor from the creature to his creator. With faith, the human admits humility, relinquish the selfish nature and acquiesce to the sovereignty of God. Only faith can accomplish this task in allowing man to realize that there is an Intelligence greater than his own. God is so far beyond anything finite that the only resource useful to have a relationship with Him is faith. Faith is the universal language to communicate with God since the act gives Him the preeminence. Faith says, “God, You are primary and I am secondary. You are great and I am small. You are worthy and I am not.” This is how it has to be since God is worthy of being ultimately praised and honored just because of who He is. He cannot and will not take second place! Faith diminishes the only competition between God and His greatest creation: Ourselves! And this very notion allowed me to sustain faith in God through life’s difficulties in which humans are so susceptible.
