Russia was forever changed in October 1917 when revolutionaries under the charismatic and determined leadership of Vladimir Ulyanov, a.k.a. Lenin, took control of all government functions in Saint Petersburg. Lenin, a radical adherent to the teaching of Karl Marx, declared himself to be a Marxist in 1889 and dedicated his life to making Marxism a reality. In Saint Petersburg, he saw his ideology take shape, and the political struggle called the Bolshevik Revolution quickly spread across the vastness of Russia. On 30 December, 1922, the flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was raised high above the Kremlin. For the next seven decades it would wave as a symbol of Communist domination over millions of people. On Christmas Day, 1991, the flag was lowered for the final time and the tricolor Russian flag took its place above the historic center of Russian history.

A Man Stood among Us is fiction but reflects real events and persons in Belarus in the years prior to the fall of the Soviet Union and the difficult years following the disbanding of the USSR. The book follows the life of a young reporter from America as he moves to Belarus and sees the changes for himself. His life is turned upside down when he meets a Belarusian pastor.
About the Author
Dan Panter is a native of Mississippi but has lived most of his adult life in other countries, including France, Germany, Russia, Belarus, and Vietnam. He is fluent in French and Russian. Panter and his wife served as missionaries in Belarus and were eyewitnesses to the chaos and upheaval following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
