Chocolate Covered Sin
And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14 (NIV)
When it comes time to give my pups their medication or vitamins, my house turns into a world wrestling competition. It starts with me chasing them around the house and yard until I have finally tricked them into a corner of the house where they can’t escape. They are mighty persistent and continually try to press towards me to break free, which ends with me pushing them a bit tighter into the corner. I then have to sprawl my legs out so that they can’t sneak around me to get away. Once I have them where I need them, then it gets fun. I swoop down to their level, and I look them straight in the eyes. Finally, with a great deal of fear and hesitation that they are going to clamp down on my fingers, I proceed to try and pry open their mouths. As I am prying their mouths apart just far enough to get the pill in, they are wiggling their heads all over the place, and taking me with them. At times I feel like I’m in the rodeo but with dogs. When I finally succeed in getting the mouth open, I then have to maneuver the pill between the teeth and stuff it down the back of the throat to keep my sweet canine from moving it with their tongue and spitting it back out at me. Once I get it properly tucked away, I have to hold that little mouth shut until my puppy swallows it. Sigh! Finally my mission is complete. After years of struggling with this, someone brought to my attention the pill pocket. The pill pocket, to me, is an incredibility horrible smelling concoction that dogs love to eat. You simply place the medication and vitamin into the pill pocket, and give them the little pocket to eat. They scarf them down like its chocolate covered cherries. No mess, no fuss, no world war III…simple and easy.
Satan isn’t about to start World War III with us. He doesn’t have to trap us in a corner and wrestle around with us to dabble in sin. Nope! He learned very early on, unlike myself, that all he has to do is cover up the sin with something appealing to the eye. Wrap it in something that captures our senses and entices us to scarf it down. It may start as a few compliments at work; compliments are always nice, especially since our spouse hasn’t been paying attention to us. Maybe a glass of wine at dinner; after all Jesus did make wine, so it can’t be that bad for us, can it?!?!? Drugs make everyone feel good, and God wants us to be happy right?!? Satan is never going to show us the real side of sin. He would never uncover the damage it does to our marriage, family, career, and relationship with the Lord, because he knows if he did, World War III would be on. He doesn’t care to chase us down and trap us in the corner. He doesn’t want to pry our mouths open and jam sin down our throats. Satan loves sin pockets! After all, he doesn’t have to do anything because we love them as well. He may be a determined and patient pest, but boy is he lazy. Let’s stop slurping up everything that looks and smells good, and start giving Satan a run for his money. Let’s make it a bit harder for him to entice us and lure us away from the Lord.
