The words “Born Again” have been misunderstood by many people for many years. Religious people sometimes feel that it only applies to “low brow” people. You know, the ones who don’t have a good academic understanding of what church is about. They may confine the term to what Baptists or Holy Roller Pentecostals believe. Others consider it a term made popular by evangelists on radio or TV. These and all other non-biblical explanations are wrong!
Born again is not a term invented by any religion or denomination. Jesus himself coined the phrase in John 3:1-21.
In the bible, a Jewish religious leader, highly respected in the community, came to Jesus and commented on the miracles Jesus was performing. Jesus did not acknowledge his words. Instead, Jesus replied: “Unless you are born again you cannot see the Kingdom of God”. Nicodemus was that religious man. He then started discussing the Born Again subject with Jesus. Perhaps he was trying to understand in his mind, his senses, what being Born Again was all about.
Today many people are still missing the point of Jesus’ message, that you must believe by faith, not making up your mind or reasoning things out, this a blessing God has provided for us. Jesus told Nicodemus that you are born once from your mother’s womb, which is the physical birth. (born of water) However being “Born Again” is a personal, spiritual choice you make to believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Jesus explains in John 3:16 and 3:36 and Paul elaborates on the choice in Romans 10:9-17 Read these in a bible and make them a part of yourself. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 the Bible tells us that if anyone (and anyone includes YOU who are reading this now), if anyone is in Christ they become a new creature. This means that the old us, the sinner, the failure, the dissatisfied part of us, is passed away. In Jesus we become new spirits. We are spirit men, we have a soul (mind. emotions & intellect). The Spirit is renewed, the body and mind are ours to renew and improve.

Lawrence “Larry” Spencer has worked in the Ministry of Helps in various churches for 33 years. He graduated from Bible school in 1983 and was ordained 2 years later. The Ministry of Helps Manual and this training program have been refined over time and used successfully in many churces. This is the first time they have been formally published.
