Introduction
I grew up in north-western Pennsylvania. Sometimes around sunset when the clouds hung purple-pink and patterned with light, my dad told me stories about these old creatures of the deep: the Minotaur, Medusa, and other tragedies. Often, he spoke of a rabbit and a tar baby and how “that old rabbit…well, he outsmarted that sly fox.” I loved it when my dad spent time with me.
In the spring of 1977 (I was 3 years old), my parents drove me to West Mifflin, PA (Pittsburgh) near the Allegheny River to visit my dad’s mom and my great aunt. We stayed with my grandma (in her parents’ house.) My dad grew up in this house. That night, I dreamt of that sly of fox; he hid deep in the back of my great uncle’s car. But when I woke up- I was safe. Surrounding me was just a bedroom with a window - and through it- the back yard leading to a stream.

About the Author
Jessica McGowan received her BA degree from North Park College and Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL and her MA from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.
Currently an instructor at Rock Valley College, Rockford IL she has taught previously at Mount Olive College, NC; Wayne Community College, NC; the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and through Central Texas College, on US Naval Ships in the North Arabian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
Now, she lives in IL with her three sons: Caleb, Joshua and Nathan. Her book The Secret Place of the Most High: Reflections of a Father’s Unfailing Love is an autobiographical novella detailing a girl’s precarious journey growing up in Pennsylvania.
