This Is the Day the Lord Has Made

The author was born in Sturgis, MI in 1960. His family moved to Phoenix, Az in 1974. He lived the Christian life for a couple of years in his early 20's but left the faith, not returning until January of 2116. Not believing he could ever be saved, it took the Lord to find and bring him back to safety.

When I was a kid my dad would take me fishing once in a while. In Michigan there were plenty of places to go. This was so exciting as I imagined catching tons offish. We would arrive at the lake, throw our gear, lunch and poles into the boat and row out onto the water. Quickly baiting the hook, I would cast my line into the water, expecting the fish to start biting immediately. With zero bites I would ask if we could move to another location. After more of this I would get frustrated. For me to have fun I had to catch fish after fish. I was very impatient. My dad was different. Years later, after my parents moved from Arizona back to Michigan my mom would tell me how my dad was fishing again. Most times he would go out by himself and spend hours on the lake. If he did not catch many fish it did not bother him. He found peace on the lake. Enjoying the beauty of nature. The water, wind, and quiet. Watching the swaying trees along the shoreline. His joy was not in the fish, but the experience. As Christians we can easily miss the experience of prayer. Like I was with fishing, too busy to appreciate the moment. Always asking God for this and that, hurriedly requesting answers then rushing into our day. Not valuing the privilege of being in God's presence. Jesus was at the house of sisters, Martha and Mary. While Martha was frantically rushing to and fro, preparing the dinner for her guests, Mary sat quietly at Jesus' feet, not saying much, just listening, enjoying His nearness, and soaking up every word. Martha complained to Jesus about Mary, asking the Lord to make Mary help her. Jesus mildly rebuked Martha, saying, "Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed, or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:41,42--NIV


Work, errands, bills, obligations, all these things of the world will always be with us.We can get so caught up being busy we neglect what is better. Spending time with Jesus.
