Proverbs 3:16, 17 TLB
Lady Wisdom is promoting a lifestyle of Wisdom. The book of Proverbs is called the "Manual for Living." She encourages a life of good judgment and discernment in understanding the times. The God-centered lifestyle provides the opportunity for success in our relationships, business, and family. From the book of Proverbs, Lady Wisdom gives the answers on how to live well in the world that God created. She is accessible to all who are willing to come to her party and eat of her goodness!
Wisdom is given to help us understand how to live well and do right as well as understand the meaning of life. What is our contribution to God’s design and purpose for our lives? We need to consider what is just, right and fair. We need fresh wisdom to help us understand the times in which we live. Things are changing so quickly because of the advancement of information. We must be able to determine what is right and wrong. Good judgment is needed.
This wisdom and understanding are not just for ourselves but also for the youth today. What nuggets of wisdom can we offer them to make their lives more meaningful and productive? Probing and digging deeper into the ways of Lady Wisdom will gain us an immense profit and enormous success in every area of our lives.
What is a Proverb?
The book of Proverbs is comprised some of the Bible's wisdom literature. A proverb is a type of Hebrew poetry that contains a massive amount of wisdom. A proverb is called a Hebrew masal which is a poetic, terse, vivid, thought-provoking saying that says a word of truth in a few words. It includes two lines that do not rhyme words but rhyme concepts. Proverbs are not commands nor promises. Proverbs sometimes need to be gathered together with other proverbs on the same subject to obtain the full understanding of the word or the complete picture. Many of the proverbs are observations of how to navigate life and what works and does not work in situations. These poetic words carry life lessons and the understanding of the complexities of life.
Studying proverbs requires that one reflects on what is said. It takes time and some effort. That is why Lady Wisdom calls the words nuggets of truth. Wisdom is something that must be discovered like gold. The wisdom nuggets compare to hard candy that must be savored to get the full flavor and sweetness of the meaning and insight.
Meditating the Word
Psalm 119:11 KJV states, “Thy word have I hid in my heart so that I may not sin against thee.” Also Psalm 1:2 KJV states, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD and in his law doth he meditates day and night.” To meditate the Bible the word of God, Robert J. Morgan gives some great strategies for biblical meditation. In his book entitled, Biblical Meditation, he provides a plan based on biblical meditation: pondering, personalizing and practicing God's word. In a quiet place away from the distractions and interruptions, he encourages us to follow these strategies.
While meditating on the words of Lady Wisdom, I found the need to add two additional strategies or "P's" to the meditation; prayer, and praise. We pray to God and ask Him to guide us through the scriptures. Next, we read and ponder the word. Then, we personalize the meaning as we interpret what the word is saying to us. Next, we practice the word and determine how we will fulfill it in our daily life. Finally, we praise God for activating his word in our spirit and our minds. We now have the 5 "P's" which are pray, ponder, personalize, practice and praise.
Pray:
God's will for our lives through His word is revealed when we pray. We must pray and ask Him to show Himself to us. We want Holy Spirit to illuminate the word before us. We desire a spirit to spirit connection. The bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 2:16 that we have the mind of Christ and know the plan, purpose, and perspective of Christ. James 1:5 states that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God and He will give it to us. Therefore, we can know the plan of God for our lives.
Ponder:
To ponder requires that we read the passage of scripture aloud. Imagine the Lord is talking to you in a personal way. Focus on each word and pay attention to the meaning. You must have a desire to understand what the passage is saying.
Personalize:
Think about what the scripture means to you. Read it thoughtfully considering what does this say to me for my body, mind, soul, and spirit. Think of this as a personal reflection letting the Holy Spirit speak to your heart. If the Holy Spirit was sitting next to you what verse, phrase, word, truth command or promise would affect you the most?
Practice:
Write down that verse, phrase, word, truth, command or promise and think about it throughout the day. When you have quiet times during the day, think about the word, you are meditating on. Think about it all day when you shower, driving the car, walking up steps, working at the desk, or daydreaming in a chair. Most of all think about it when you are going to sleep. You can also share it with a friend or someone who may need a right word for the day. You can share it on your social media platforms like Facebook. Finally, put it into practice by being obedient to what the word of God says for you to do. Practice it.
