The Lowly Foot
Take off your shoes
Reconnect with Mother Earth
Delight in cool, wet grass after a summer shower
Notice that small hailstone
Avoid the sharp, prickly hayfields
Take note of every pebble in a gravel driveway
Sink into shifting beach sand
Beware of hot asphalt
Observe the rough bark as you climb a tree
Put your shoes back on
Climb mountains
Walk in the woods
Up or down
In or out
Think of all the places your feet have taken you.
Morning Walk
Covered with soft gray and white fur
Running into the wind
Little white legs moving at top speed
Perky, white tipped tail erect
Fluffy gray ears streaming back
Beautiful black eyes shining with vitality
Full of wild energy
Stimulated by the cold air

About the Author
Emily L. Messenger was born September 7, 1931 at the beginning of the Great Depression. She was raised on a dairy farm in eastern Connecticut and attended local schools graduating as valedictorian from Plainfield High School. She earned her BA in education from UConn. After her marriage, she moved to the rural town of Granby. There she raised three daughters and had a successful career as an elementary teacher. While teaching 3rd grade she served on a town-wide science curriculum committee. She also has been an active member of the First Congregational Church of Granby since 1954. She has taught Sunday School in her church, served on several committees was a loyal member of the choir. After retirement, she taught ESL, volunteered as a reader for a second grade class, experimented with stained glass, studied writing for children, built and learned to play a dulcimer. At the age of 80 she wrote her first poem and discovered a hidden talent. She has been compared to Robert Frost. Many areas of interest and wrote her first poem at the age of 80. These poems are collected here for your entertainment and inspiration.
