"Move over!" the thistle would complain, "Rose, can't you just squinch over an inch?"
The rose would just give its rosebud a slight bow and say, "I'm sorry friend, Thistle, my roots go down here and here I must stay."
"Well, I'm not happy about it, I'll have you know!" the thistle would snap sharply as a snapdragon, and then ignore the rose for a time, just to let the rose know how unhappy it was about the whole situation.
