In The Blink Of An Eye

When we are young, we want to be older,
and when we’re old, we’d like to regain our youth.
But we know there’s nothing short of dying,
that will prevent our getting a little longer in the tooth.

We are born, and in the blink of an eye,
we find ourselves in our teenage years.
Then before we know what has happened,
our youth and innocence just disappears.

Adulthood is our next challenge,
and it seems to last for some length of time.
But in the blink of an eye, adulthood is gone,
and we’re no longer in our prime.

We’ve had children and they are grownups now
and some have children of their own.
And in our senior years we often wonder,
just where has our time flown.

Our grandchildren have graduated school,
and it seems just yesterday they sat on our knee.
But now we’re taking pictures of them,
proudly displaying their college degree.

What has happened over all those years?
We don’t feel any older in our mind.
But sometimes tasks that we once found easy,
now require that we use every ounce of strength we can find.

Our hair is changing color,
and sometimes it just falls out.
The aging process has taken over,
and we question, “Hey, what’s that all about?”

Somehow, we’ve developed dark circles under our eyes,
and some of us now have “alligator skin.”
It’s no longer safe for us to climb up ladders,
but most times we feel good, at least for the shape we’re in.

We suddenly have wrinkles that weren’t there before,
and brown spots on our hands.
Our eyesight isn’t what it used to be,
and quite often our waist expands.

Our hearing seems to fade a bit,
and our memory isn’t sharp anymore.
All these things are signs of aging,
which we simply prefer to ignore.

One day we receive a wedding invitation.
Someone’s getting married. Who could it be?
When we open it, we find it’s our grand-child,
who just yesterday we held on our knee.

Years pass, and the announcement of a newborn is made.
We’ve lived long enough, a great-grandparent to be.
God has blessed us abundantly over the years,
just look around, it’s so easy to see.

In the blink of an eye our lifetime has passed,
my oh my how the years have flown.
We look back and it seems that it passed in an instant,
but we’re thankful for all the happy times we’ve known.

God created the Heavens and the Earth in the blink of an eye.
Each of us were created in the same way.
Just remember, the life God gives us is like an ice cream cone,
eat it up, or in the blink of an eye, it will melt away.
