God’s Promise to Me
“I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord” (Psalm 118:17 KJV).
When my husband was in the midst of his two-year battle with brain cancer, a friend of mine told me that God asked her to share Psalm 118:17 with me as a promise. Given my situation, she and I were convinced that this was a promise of my husband’s healing which gave me a hope I desperately needed. From then on, I prayed believing that this cancer battle would soon be over and my husband would live to share his brilliant testimony of healing. Sadly, that is not what happened. He grew worse and passed away at the tender age of thirty-three.
After I had gone through a long grieving process and fought chronic depression for an extended period of time, this verse came to my mind again. At that moment, God spoke to my heart, and I realized this verse was meant for me and not for my husband. So, in the midst of this terrible struggle, God had seen me and was working on a plan for my future. By writing these devotions and sharing my testimony, I am indeed living and declaring His works.
It is amazing to look back from the other side and see all the ways that God redeemed this awful situation. I see how He gave me spiritual insight for my writing, empathy for those who are hurting, and a testimony of His love and faithfulness to share with others for the rest of my life. I see how He never left my side during the journey, and I know from this experience that He will never leave me. I am truly blessed to be a child of God who can now serve as a living example of a life changed by His holy, glorious, redemptive, and transformational power.
“‘I say this because I know what I am planning for you,’ says the Lord. ‘I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future’” (Jeremiah 29:11 NCV).

Love Lifted Me is an unfolding story of God’s love as it is revealed in everyday life. About the Author
Kelly Ferguson writes daily devotions for the church where she works as a ministry assistant. Her devotions were widely shared by her readers, who encouraged her to write this, her debut book. Her devotions have been featured both online and in print. Kelly is a transplanted Ohioan who makes her home in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee with her family and their three cats.
