What God Does Not Know

It seemed that the truth was just out of my reach. Although most of the time I didn’t want to know the reality of my condition, there were those moments that I knew something was wrong. It was like that breeze on the first really hot summer day that sparks a memory that you can’t quite place. The memory calls, but when you try to focus, it becomes a vapor leaving you sad with no idea why.

It’s like when you walk into a room but you can’t recall why you’re there. You pause, shrug your shoulders, turn around and exit the room. Or, when you see a piece of furniture that calls you back to a time in your life filled with love and joy, before the pain of life took your innocence or your dreams. For that brief few seconds you recall the truth of love. You want to reach out and grasp it, but your arms are empty and you realize you are too.

The truth of the matter is, most everyone around us is dead. Just like me, they don’t know it. It’s hard to share that little fact with someone. As soon as you inform them that they may, in fact, be dead they tend to write you off. Just as I did when I had lunch with my friend, I rejected what would give me life.

But when one person listens and hears the truth of their situation, the potential of life, real life, is suddenly right in front of them.

This is my story, you can call me Jim. In the pages that follow, you’ll be introduced to me and many of you will realize that my story is as old as time itself. Many of you will say this is your story. Of course some of the details will be different. Different times, different places, or even different circumstances. But our stories are similar. You’ll almost be able to finish my story before the end of the chapter. My story has been repeated countless times over the centuries. Just like me, many of you were dead and, just like me, you found life.

Others are also just like me, when I was dead. It’s okay, go ahead and chuckle. If you are in the same condition, you are a dead person reading a book that opens up about a dead man telling his story. It does seem strange, but we were dead to the truth of life. You’ll say the same things I did. ‘I’m a good person.’ ‘I believe in God.’ ‘I went to church.’ ‘My family is very religious.’ And the list of phrases could go on. Yes, you are just like me.

However, you’ll also hear about spiritual truths that brought the knowledge of my death to my attention. You may say that when I realized just how completely dead I was it had my full attention. And when the Truth had my undivided attention it was then I experienced redemption, and how life, real life, followed and actually changed everything about me. What is it that God does not know? Is it possible that the answer to that one question could also answer all your other questions including the deepest desire in your heart?
