Reflections
Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Matthew 21:22 NIV
It was my first year of my first marriage. I attended a women’s retreat hosted by our church. My sister in law, Andrea Smith, spoke. In her message, I remembered her saying two things. One was there was only one preacher in her house and the other was how we can use the acronym, ACTS to pray. Up until that point, I thought I could pray. I wasn’t comfortable praying out loud until she taught use this acronym. I am forever grateful to Andrea because my prayer life would not be what it is today if it wasn’t for her sharing that day.
How I Pray
ACTS
The following acronym, ACTS, is the way I pray:
Acknowledge who GOD is
Confess your sins
Thanksgiving give thanks to God
Supplication (ask the Lord for what you want)
Here’s an example of how I pray using the acronym, ACTS. Expect to witness answers to prayers.
When I acknowledge who God is I say who He is to me. He is my father. He is my creator. He is the beginning and the end. He is all-knowing.
When I confess my sins I say Lord forgive me for the resources you have put in my life that I didn’t use. Forgive me for constantly asking you for increase when I haven’t been a good steward over the things you have already given me....
When I give thanks, I say, “thank you Lord for waking me up this morning. Thanks for allowing me to work in an industry that I love and thanks for giving me the passion and desire and skills to do what I do. Thanks for putting people in my life who I can help and who I can help.”
At the end of my prayer I ask him for what it is I want. I try not to start praying and always asking God for stuff. I would not want to be in a relationship with anyone that the moment we speak, they are begging.
What if you don’t know the Lord?
The most important prayer if you don’t know the Lord is the prayer of salvation. Over the years of me being a Christian, I have heard several pastors, ministers and preachers say that all you have to do is Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, Believe that He is your Lord and Savior, and Confess it with mouth that you accept and believe it.
Allow yourself to pray for others as well as yourself. Allow God to use you. It’s freedom and a privilege. Keep in mind that God knows all. He knows the truth.
One more thing, friends: Pray for us. Pray that the Master’s Word will simply take off and race through the country to a groundswell of response, just as it did among you. And pray that we’ll be rescued from these scoundrels who are trying to do us in. I’m finding that not all “believers” are believers. But the Master never lets us down. He’ll stick by you and protect you from evil.
