Jesus said that he would never leave us or forsake us, that he would
always be devoted to us. God stayed with me during my difficult years;
he had me read the book of Psalms, which King David wrote. I felt I
could relate to all his pain, anger, fear, and uncertainty. God called him
to become the king of Israel; he was a musician and a worshipper of
God. He didn’t care if he made a fool of himself; he once danced in the
street without his clothes. He was completely sold out to the same God
we serve today.
Many believe that God spoke with only David, Abraham, Adam,
and the prophets, but he never changes; the door is always open for us
to speak to and worship him. I would often cry out to God as David
did with all my pain and disappointment; I knew he understood all our
struggles and just wanted us to be honest with him. He is all seeing and
knowing, but he wants us to dialogue with him about our pains, fears,
and struggles.
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in
turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise
him, my salvation and my God. (Psalm 42:5–6)
Early during my recovery and restoration, I was awaken in the middle of the night. It felt as if God were speaking to me about the Song of Solomon. I knew I needed to read it, so when I got up that morning, I searched it out. I had never read it before. Well, it was difficult and seemed to be a love story of some sort. I was wondering, Why would God put a love story in the Bible? Well, little did I know that that love story involved Jesus and me.
He started out with declaring who he was in chapter 2; he came leaping over the mountains bounding over the hills. He stands behind our wall. He is beckoning her, to “Arise my love, my beautiful one, and come away, for behold the winter is past and the rain is over and gone. The
flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come!”
I thought, What a dramatic scene, and how determined the Lord is to get our
attention. He wants her to follow him! He is leaping over a mountain! I felt
he was saying, “There’s nothing we can’t do together. Your mountains
are so small that I can even leap over them!” Zephaniah 3:17 reads,
“The Lord your God is in your midst a mighty one who will save; he
will rejoice over you with gladness, he will quiet you by his love, he will
exhault over you with Loud singing!” This is another very dramatic
word; he will quiet us with his love and sing loudly over us. It is true—he
will put a new song in us, a song to worship him. He is that devoted to
our love. He wants to be that involved in our lives.
