Healing Words

My husband and I were on our way back home from a trip. We needed gas so we pulled off the exit and found a gas station. We drove to the first pump that was available. On the other side of the pump were a woman and two men, who were having a conversation. As we pumped our gas, we could hear the trio talking. (Not that we were eavesdropping, but they were talking very loud.) What made this conversation unique was that every other word that came out of their mouths was a curse word. It was shocking, sickening and saddening all at the same time. It was shocking, because they were so fluent in speaking these curse words. They didn’t think anything of it. These words came out of their mouths with such ease. You can tell that it was just a part of their natural, normal conversation. What words are coming out of your mouth? I am not necessarily talking about profanity or vulgarity. However, I am talking about unhealthy words. Words that can “curse” your future, hinder your healing, and stop you from moving into what God has for you. I am talking about words of negativity, pessimism, discouragement, doubt, hopelessness, or unbelief. Do you know that God is ready to perform a miracle in your life, but the words that you speak can stop him? In Matthew 13:53, you will see that the people of Jesus’ “own country” (verse 54), Jesus’ family, missed out on their blessing, because of the words of unbelief that came out of their mouths. Matthew 13:58 says, “Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” God’s word tells us to be careful of the words we speak. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth…” The word corrupt means bad or unhealthy. Therefore this scripture is saying, let no “unhealthy word” proceed out of your mouth. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and Life are in the power of the tongue.” According to the book of James, the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. “It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:5, 8). Our tongue can be a dangerous instrument that can spew out words that can ruin and even destroy what God has for us. What unhealthy word is proceeding out of your mouth? 1 Corinthians 11:28a says, “Let a man/woman, examine himself or herself….” Before we can change the way we talk, we need to first analyze the words we speak, and investigate where these words are coming from. Do you often say such things as “I will never get healed”? “I will always be broke.” “My marriage will never be restored.” “My children will never be saved.” “I will never get a job.” “I will never have any money.” “I am so stupid.” “I can’t do this. I can’t do that.” In my introduction, I mentioned the first words that came out of my mouth when I received a bad report from the physician were, “Suppose it’s Cancer! You may die!” Many of us may not even be aware of the words we speak. Just like the people at the gas station, these words may be a part of your normal language.
