Introduction Seven years ago, before anyone ever thought of “the cloud,” my phone screen went blank. In fact, it was black and it shut down completely. My contacts, my data, all my photos, projects, and passwords were all erased. I did a hard reset to fix my frozen phone; but, instead of resurrecting my data life, it wiped the phone clean. It was a blank slate, a hard reset. Everything was gone. My whole life was wiped away by the push of a button. I was devastated. Wait—what? How did this happen? Did I Reset it? I had wiped the entire phone clean? No memory? No data? No photos? No calendar? Everything important to me was gone. I was about to board a plane to Costa Rica and my phone had become frozen, so I knew I had to reset it… It was going to be my first Christmas alone, divorced, and without my children for the holiday, so I decided to travel to Costa Rica. I couldn’t imagine that in one moment my life would reset, personally, and now on my phone. As I waited to board the plane I asked myself, was this HARD RESET a blessing in disguise? Yes, I affirmed. I am a blank screen now. It was there in the airport that I realized I had to re-start my life over. Re-build it, re-write it, restore it, and RESET it. I knew that I could not let the fear of starting over grip me, and that this hard reset would be okay, better somehow. In my vulnerability, I would lose the past, be in the present moment, and step into the courage of resetting myself towards a new future. I decided at that Re-set moment that I would learn from the past, and not live in it. From now on, I said to myself, I am going to live purposefully in the present. Taking a Hard Reset in my life and starting fresh has been the most freeing and gratifying life choice I have ever made! Hard Reset, your life to freedom!

About the Author
Charity Morsey is a national security expert, professor, diplomat, and author. She has traveled to over thirty countries during her career and speaks five languages. She has a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Pepperdine University. Presently, Morsey volunteers as a motivational speaker at local women’s shelters and recovery homes, and loves watching her two boys excel in life and in sports. She founded Generation for Freedom, a non-profit committed to raising up the next generation for lives of purpose and service through women and children breaking free from the chains of poverty and slavery. Growing up, Charity Morsey’s parents ran a home for those in need. “I was raised to live out my name Charity through my life’s calling,” she says. Over the last two decades of her impressive public service career, Morsey has acted as the first special assistant on international affairs for the Science and Technology Directorate at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a senior policy advisor on nuclear nonproliferation at the U.S. Department of Energy under President George W. Bush. She also served as an analyst in the California Governor’s Office of Homeland Security. It was through this work that she learned about the impact of human trafficking and slave labor on women and children, which inspired her to launch her own non-profit. Generation for Freedom is developing a safe house for survivors of human trafficking and other forms of slavery. They also provide services to reconstruct and restore lives, while cultivating a community that helps people rebuild their self-worth. Morsey says, “I’m inspired by the women who take bold steps to break free from the cycle of human trafficking.
