Everyone wants a word spoken over their lives. A glimpse into the best version of himself/herself that can be. Whether that is from a parent we respect, a spouse we love, our children we helped create or a mentor we look up to, we all want that feeling of empowerment and rejuvenation that comes when a blessing is spoken. You are anointed by God with His Spirit once; you are blessings multiple times throughout your life time. We have many topics and ideas that make us feel blessed in our own eyes. You know for a fact you are “blessed”; you know God’s hand is on your life because you have a nice job, your house in nice, your kids are healthy and everything is working in your favor. That doesn’t mean you are blessed, it just means you have provision in areas. Was Pharaoh blessed? He had more money than any of us could imagine. He owned everything he could put his hands on. Pharaoh was the leader of a country, one of the greatest countries in its time. By all accounts, he was the epitome of blessed and powerful man. At the same time, he was mean, malicious, vile and evil. On the contrary, there are some of you reading this book now who live a life that seems like things just keep happening in the negative. You can’t get a moments peace; every opportunity misses your hands or it slips through your very fingers. Everything or everyone is breaking down and nothing appears to be working in your favor. I know this may seem odd, but this doesn’t necessary mean you are not blessed. You could be in the process. To understand what a blessing is, let us go back to Mark 6:41, our place of emphasis, Jesus looked up, blessed and broke the bread and fish. Which type of blessed are we talking about here. Knowing that there are 2 words and points of emphasis on the word blessed in the new testament, which blessed is he referring to. Let me say that English is one of the worst languages to translate anything into, remember our discussion on peace and piece. They may sound alike, but the emphasis and meaning can be completely different. Let’s look at what each blessed means in the New Testament of the Bible. There isn’t just one blessed, to be accurate, there are 5 Greek words used in the new testament that are translated as blessed in the King James version of our Bible. There are really only two primary thoughts for blessed though, happy and the blessed we are going to explore. One of those words for blessed is markarios, which means happy or praised. I know getting a new job definitely makes me happy. I know getting a new house makes me happy. I know getting the things I desire will definitely make me happy. This is the word used in the “B” attitudes in Matthew 6. The second one eulogeo and is the main word we are dealing with in Mark 6:41 for blessed and it will challenge your belief system to its core like it did for me.
When God told me I was blessed, I was completely confused. Nothing in my environment said blessed. I was away from my children because of lies. I was homeless. I was going through a bitter divorce. I was in financial ruin. Based on my definition of blessed, I was completely lost in a pit of despair and pain. After expressing blessed, a feeling of amazement and complete confusion filled every fiber of my being. I had a Selah moment, you know, that pause of reflection that challenges your previously held idea about a concept. I found the word eulogeo.
