When I think about everything I have been through in my personal life, I have to thank God for reminding me that I was a man on a mission. Through all my challenges and difficulties, God helped me to move into a place of healing, which was found only in Him. I used to hear other Christians call Him a deliverer, a healer, and a restorer, but it wasn’t until my mother went home to be with the Lord that I realized for myself that God is able to heal all pain and heartache. The hurt that was in my heart after losing my mother was so painful. In my most challenging time, I found my healing environment in God’s Word. His Word provided me a place where I could go and not be judged as a man, as a pastor, or as a Christian. The Bible teaches us that God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world in John 3:17 (NKJV). We must never forget that the world, through Jesus Christ, was saved by God’s grace. The person who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is condemned already. I learned in this healing environment that even when I felt depressed, and many times I did, in Christ I was free from the bondage of my pain and depression. The less I focused on me and what I was going through and began to really trust God at His Word, the more peace I felt as I went through my challenging season. We have to know that “He hath borne our grief and carried our sorrows. yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Jesus was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him and by His stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:4–5 NKJV). As Christians, we have to understand that if we are going to survive the difficult experiences in life, we must trust in the Lord to direct our paths. We have to learn how to trust in the power of God because He will make a way for us in every situation life brings our way. We also have to stand strong on the promises of God.

Edward D. Harris Sr. is the senior pastor of Christ Power Church and Ministries, an EFCA urban ministry in Baltimore, Maryland. He pastors a growing church ministry in the northeastern area of Baltimore and has served as a guest speaker at the Association of Christian School International Leadership Conference and as a contributing clergy in the EFCA Today ministry magazine. He and his wife, Sheli, have two young adult sons and currently live in Maryland.
