It was at this point in my life when I realized the true meaning of “purpose” through God’s eyes. Remember what I said in an earlier chapter about kairos vs chronos? That concept applies to your purpose in life too! His timing is perfect, because you live out your purpose in His timing.
God’s purpose for you
Through my experience, here’s what I learned about purpose. In life, we don’t have one specific, definitive, purpose, but God has a purpose for you. God put you on this Earth for a reason because He knew that what you would do would result in so much goodness for His kingdom and this world! One of my favorite verses is Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” You see, God does have a purpose and plans for you on this Earth! Remember the odds that you are on this Earth from the earlier chapter? God wouldn’t put you on this Earth if you didn’t have a purpose! And here’s the thing, we don’t have one singular purpose in life. We don’t just “find our calling” in pursuit of one specific subject or passion. It’s a lifelong process, and it doesn’t just involve one occupation or thing that we do.
From the moment that you were born you had a purpose laid out for you by God, and that purpose is ultimately to bring glory to God, and He gives us special gifts that help us accomplish that goal. 1 Peter 2:9 says that “You are a chosen race… a people of His own possession, that you may proclaim His goodness.” God put you on this Earth because He knew you could bring glory to Him. Our purpose in life is not to find one singular thing we’re passionate about, because God doesn’t give us one singular gift for means of building for His kingdom. It’s not like God says “this girl is a dancer, so the only way she is going to bring glory to My kingdom is through dance, and that is what her one true purpose is on this Earth.”
No, God gives you many gifts that bring goodness for His kingdom! Our purpose in life is to proclaim the goodness of God through the multiple unique aspects of our personality that He gives us! And the best part is, our purpose isn’t found at some point in our life when we feel like we’ve found our true calling, because odds are that calling will change or grow. Your purpose started the very moment you were conceived. By following your heart at whatever passions are fascinating you, you are following your purpose in life. Our purpose is ultimately to proclaim the goodness of God’s love. God gives us certain interests in passions in life because He knows how unique we are and He knows that different things will touch people in different ways in order to build His kingdom! Beloved, you are living in your purpose right now. Whether your passion is sports, art, science, math, building, dancing, teaching, or baking, it is all given to you from God, and you are called to use that passion for the goodness of Him! You are called to use your passions to share the love of Christ! The thing is though, your passions and interests change throughout life. Like me, you may have been an athlete growing up. At that point in life, you were called to use your athletic ability to build for His kingdom. Later in life, you may have been interested in more of academic-based passion, like me with neuroscience. Or you could still be passionate about athletics! The thing is, it doesn’t matter what your fervors are in life. During every point in your life, your purpose remains the same: to share the love of Christ.
The means of how you accomplish this purpose is going to be completely different than any friend or family member. Think of it, every human being on this Earth is so uniquely wired. Even identical twins! Did you know that you have about 90 billion neurons in your body? And guess what? Your 90 billion neurons are wired completely differently from anybody else that has ever existed! God wires you in a very specific way in order to put different passions on your heart to help you live out your purpose, to build for His kingdom. I truly believe that when Psalm 139 says that we were knit together in our mother's womb, He meant neurons! He knit out neurons!
Think of this like baking a cake. When you are constructing the cake, lots of different ingredients have to go into it in order for the batter to come together. Also, the measurements have to be exact in order for it to come out right. And the purpose of that cake? Maybe it’s to celebrate something, or just to enjoy as a tasty snack! Here’s the thing; during the baking process, lots of different, specific, ingredients go into the cake. But all of the ingredients result in the same purpose: a yummy cake. The cake can’t be perfectly delicious without sugar, vanilla extract, or eggs. It’s edible, but it won’t accomplish its ultimate purpose. Now imagine God “baking a cake” when you were made. But instead, your ultimate purpose is to build for His kingdom. When God was making you, He had a multitude of specific measurements of traits in which He made you by. The proportions may not be the same; maybe you had 25% of four different major passions in life, and you use those passions equally to share His love as you grow throughout life. Or maybe, He constructed you with 90% of a musical passion, and you have ten other passions that take up 1% of your being, and you still use all of those for your purpose! Although the proportions look different on everyone, The end result is still perfect, because it’s exactly how God made you, and it accomplishes your purpose: to spread His love!
Beloved, before you were even conceived, you had a purpose. God wanted you on this Earth for a reason, and He knit you together so perfectly in order to accomplish that reason. You are here for a reason. A perfect, God-given reason.
