On the morning of my first Monday as a housemother in the Kodiak Baptist Children’s Home, the relief housemother named Mildred asked if I would like to bake bread , or do the laundry. Since I had taught myself to bake bread as a newlywed, and could turn out two loaves quite nicely, I volunteered to bake. Little did I know just how big the job was!
Mildred went into the pantry and returned with the largest bag of flour I had ever seen, a huge metal bowl, a stack of twelve bread pans, and a quart jar full of yeast. “Here is the recipe” she said with a smile on her face. “This should get you started. I think you know where everything else is.” And with that, Mildred turned on her heel and retreated to the laundry room in the basement. Later that day….at 4:50 PM to be exact…..there were twelve loaves of bread sitting on the counter, waiting to be eaten in the next two days by fourteen hungry children. And me? I was exhausted from the kneading and the pounding that went into making all that bread.
I learned an unforgettable lesson that day. Like bread dough, I often get puffed up with my own sense of importance and self-worth. And it is then that God “kneads” the dough of my life to once again give me room to grow in faith and humility. The Bible teaches that “pride goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) And when my life is full of pride, the yeast of faith has no room to grow.
Humility is a virtue. May I continually seek to be humble.
PRAYER: Help Me, Father, to allow Your Word to be the yeast that fills my life with fullness. Amen.

About the Book
Written during the course of five decades in moments between sending her older sons off to elementary school and giving her newborn son a bath, JudyAnn Krell Morse shares a host of moments when a simple sign of God’s love filtered into her consciousness.

Morse, who has survived some of life’s harshest storms, offers her testimony in the form of devotionals to prompt others to recognize the signs of God’s love.
About the Author
While growing up as a “preachers kid” in Iowa and Illinois, JudyAnn Krell Morse cultivated a strong faith in God. She served one year in Alaska as an American Baptist Home Missionary, and fourteen years on staff at a religious convention grounds. Her written devotions have appeared in The Secret Place; presently she is the pastor of a small congregation in downtown Burlington, Iowa, a position she has held for eighteen years. Married, she is the mother of eight grown children and step-children.
