The Cleansing
(Ps 37:7, 46:10; Exo 14:14)
I stand in the wind
while it whips along,
plastering my body
with fine dust,
the powdered aftermath
of life and death
and thirsty earth.
Deadwood and seedpods
hit the roof, my legs.
Birds of prey swoop overhead
looking for the innocent,
uncovered, to devour.
O Wind of God,
protect your own!
Hover over, cover us!
Breath of Life, strengthen us!
Heart of Sun, empower us:
your heat, our hope;
your air, our health;
your still small voice
our Word of choice,
while all around us
innuendo and
assumptions swirl!
I brush dust from my face.
His breeze flies by,
consoles my soul
then shivers all the trees
with swoops of power.
The Spirit breathes
and lifts away debris.
The land is swept,
cleaned up and clarified.
I watch. I wait. I listen for
the Whisperer,
my heart’s desire.
Be quiet now;
remember who I am,
and that I rule.
Wait patiently for me.
Let go of your concern
regarding those
whose schemes succeed.
My strength is
all you need.
I fight for you,
and you, my child,
need only to be still.

About the Book
Does God really speak to us today? Linnea became desperate to hear him, to learn to listen for his voice instead of just mouthing prayers. She found that the spiritual disciplines of solitude and silence opened the way for her to practice listening, and she chronicled her journey in poems. This collection shares key elements of that journey. Come listen with her and find consolation, hope and rest!
About the Author
Linnea Boese has spent most of her life in Africa. She grew up there as the daughter of medical missionaries. Dr. Dwight and Barbara Slater, and she and her husband Glenn worked in northern Côte d’Ivoire as missionaries with WorldVenture for 40 years. Her ministry focused mainly on linguistics and partnering with a team in Bible translation for the least-reached Nyarafolo people. The New Testament, Pentateuch and Psalms are now in print, in Nyarafolo!
In order to be equipped for this project, Linnea added an M.A. in linguistics and an M.Div. to her B.A. in journalism. She truly loves words, especially the Word.
During the journey she has found herself responding most readily to what the Lord is saying by picking up her pen. Now retired and living in Detroit, a current goal is to “tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done”(Ps 78:4 NIV).
